A—16 THOMSON SCHOOL PRIMPING ASKED Grounds Need Attention, Say Mid-City Citizens in Resolution. ‘Three measures relative to school ffairs will be presented at the next meeting .of. the- Board vt Education -by the Nid-city Citizens' Assbciation as & result of resolutions passed by the as- sociation at its meeting last night at Thomson School, Twelfth and L streets. In one of the resolutions the asso- ciation will ask the board to take steps to begutify and make more sanitary th: grounds of the Thomson School. George A. Warren, chairman of the Bchool Committee of the association, who introduced all three resolution: outlined the conditions which the reso- lution says exists at the school because of the mud in wet weather and dust in ‘dry weather. The resolution also asks for a drinking fountain on the grounds at the school, as well as for & more beautiful fence surrounding the grounds, which it says is in an un- sightly state. Would Demolish Old School. Another of the resolutions recom- mends the demolition of the old Abbott School at Fifth street and New York avenue and the use of the ground for & small recreation park, “or for such other use as the Commissioners might deem best for the community.” The old building is condemned as unsightly in the resolution. A possible use for the ground was suggested in a public parking place for patrons of the new Center Market at PFifth and K streets. ‘The old building, it is said, is now used only for storage purposes. ‘The third resolution commends the Board of Education for the stand taken with regard to the “subkinder- garten,” which has been established in connection with the Americanization School in the old Webster School Build- ing at Tenth and H streets. The kin- dergarten was established, it is pointed out, for the children of those foreign- born women who attend the Ameri- canization School, because they are toq, young tp be left at home. Although the mafntenance of this kindergarten is contrary to an agreement, it was said, the association went on record as in favor of the “highly commendable” action of the board in giving the chil- dren of the foreign-born mothers these Tacilities. Farmers and Dealers Guests. Farmers and dealers in the new Cen- ter Market were guests of the associa- tion at last night's meeting. A number of them attended, and two, James L. Backovac and Mrs. Octave Delvigne, spoke on behalf of the market in thanking the association for the steps it is taking and has taken to improve | its new location. President A. J. Driscoll of the asso- elation spoke to the farmers and deal- ers on behalf of his organization, tell- ing them: “We are as interested in the new Center Market as you are and are as happy as you that it is successful. If at any time you have suggestions which you think will better the location for your benefit and for your customers’, the association will be glad to extend any h!lp it is able.” Mr. Driscoll pointed out that addi- tional stall space has been obtained,| and possibly a canopy or shed roof for outside stalls is now being considered. Contributions Are Urged. Louis Ottenberg, representative of the Community Chest, spoke of the cam- paign that organization is making in ths District at this time, urging con- tribution to the cause. The matter of a contribution as an association was turned over to the executive committee. Others called upon for talks by President Driscoll were Judge Robert E. Mattingly of the Police fCourt, Police Capt. H. H. Grove of No. 8 precinct and E. E. Swan, assistant treasurer of the American Security & Trust Co., Central Branch, Seventh street and Massachusetts avenue, all members of the association. Statesman Ends Life.
