Mrs. Frank Hume, 87 years old, long prominent in philanthropic and wel- fare activities here and & lifelong resident of the National Capital, died at her home, 1235 Massachusetts ave- nue, yesterday. She had been in fail- ing health for about a year. Mrs. Hume was one of the incor- porators of the Episcopal Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital and served on its Board of Lady Managers for many years. She also had served on the Board of Lady Managers of Garfield Hospital for & long while. At the time of her death she was honorary mem- ber of both boards. Mrs. Hume had the distinction of having been one of the last persons living to have an interview with Flowers For FUNERALS— STAR, WASHI} President Lincoln and at one time pre- sented him with a petition which re- sulted in the releasing of several hun- dred Confederate soldlers who were confined in prison here following the Civil War, it was explained today. She had the additional distinction of having attended private presidential re- ceptions of _ever; President from Buchanan to Coolidge. Before her marriage Mrs. Hume was Miss Emma Phillips Norris. She was the daughter of the late John Edmund Norris and the late Mrs. Eliza Tydings Phillips Norris. She received her edu- cation in the city schools and the Academy of the Visitation. She was married in the old Trinity Church in 1870. Her husband died a numbsr of | years ago. Mrs. Hume is survived by five sons— Frank Norris Hume, Robert Scott Hume and Alan Phillips Hume of this city, Maj. Howard Hume of the Medical Corps, U. 8. A, now stationed at Fort Sill, Okla, and John Edmund Norris Hume of Schenectady, N, Y.—and four daughters—Mrs. Thomas W. Cooke and Mrs. Henry C. Jewett, both of this city; Mrs, Linn 8. Horner, wife of the newly elected Representative of Clarksburg, W. Va., and Mrs, James Leland Howard of Hartford, Conn. She also leaves 10 grandchildren and, three great-grand- children.
