C, TUESDAY, JANUARY “UNCLE SAM AT YOUR SERVICE” TR The United States Postal Service has been a pioneer in the seventeenth, eighteenth and nine- teenth centuries; being always abreast of the fore- most in progressive igenuity and invention and serv- ice. Faster, faster, faster, the mall relay must be made! Day by day, since May 18, 1918, more and more airplanes soar into the sky with cargoes of long-distance airmail. In New York City and Bos- ton even the “local” mail is distributed by air—by compressed air. The mail is sorted into steel cyl- inders which are slipped into pneumatic tubes through which they are shot by compressed air to the nearest branch postal station. There a man snatches up the cylinders marked for that station and drops the others into another tube and they are relayed on from station to station until all have been delivered. In other cities the mail which bears local addresses is rushed from the main post office TARZAN AND THE GOLDEN LION Early next morning Tarzan set out toward Opar. Commanding his Waziri to march forward in the most direct way, the ape-man left them. He was determined to solve the mystery of that arrow and those footprints. He had not followed the spoor of the stranger far before he came upon further evidence of this new and malign personality. For stretched before him in the trail was the body of a glant ape, one of the very tribe of great anthropoids among whom Tarzan had been raised. “Coprright, 00, by Edger Rice Burrougha, Tne. All igh reserved N/ Protruding frcm the Mangani's body was another of the machine-made arrows of civilization. The ape-man’s eyes narrowed ‘and a scowl darkened his brow. Who was this who dared to invade his sacred preserves and slaughter Tarzan's people? A low growl rumbled in the throat of the ape-man. With it went the thin veneer of civilization that Tarzan wore among white men. No English lord was he now who looked upon the body of his hairy cousin—but another jungle beast viewing the bloody work of ruthless man. Compressed-Air Mail. to the branch stations by armored automobile trucks. The rhen at the main post office who sort the “local” mail before it goes to the substations must know, as soon as they see an address on an envelope, just where that house or building is situated. They must know which letter carrier at the substation, will deliver the letter; for they sort each carrier’s mail into separate bundles. The clerk puts a sii paper with his name and the date on eyery package MISCELCIDANEOUS of mail he sorts, so when mistakes are made the postmaster may know who made them. No one can be careless or make mistakes and remain in the postal service. When the letter carriers arrive at the substations in the morning they find their re- spective bundles of mail ready for them. Tomor= row—Following the Footsteps of the Man in Gray. (ALl rights protected. ~Trade mark registered 0. & Patent Office.) By EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS In Tarzan’s breast raged the fire of suspicion and hatred for the man-thing that is the natural herit- age of the jungle-bred. He hastened on, traveling up-wind. An hour after he had discovered the ape’s body, his keen nostrils caught the scent spoor of others of its kind. Tarzan moved with great wariness, lest warned of his approach they would take flight before they-were aware of his identity. He /did not see the apes often nowadays. Yet he knew there were always those among the tribe who r;called him as a youth when he lived as one of them. Swinging freely and swiftly through the dense foliage, he came presently upon the giant anthro- poids. Twenty there were, busy feeding. Tarzan paused upon a leafy branch and watched them. Every action and movement of the great apes re- called vividly to Tarzan’s mind his childhood. Then, protected by the fierce mother love of Kala the she ape, he had ranged the jungle with the tribe of Kerchak. In these romping young he again saw Neeta and his other childhood playmates, and in the adults the ape-man visioned the great savage brutes he had feared in youth. SITUATIO!
