The expansion which is taking place in the manufacture of au- tomatic stokers is indicative of increas- ing success in checking the encroach- ments of substitute fuels in the do- mestic market, But the great activity of recent months in building and pro- jecting pipe lines for long-distance transmission of natural gas introduces a new factor, the effect of which can- not be definitely measured at this time. This particular competition already has taken a toll of approximately 10 per cent of the normal output of soft coal in one of the Southern States in 1930. On the engineering side, the coal in- dustry has not been idle.
