KARLSRUHE, Germany (Special).— ‘The tobacco research institute in Forckheim, near Karlsruhe, which pos- sesses some 150,000 tobacco plants from all parts of the world, has recently made public the results of ¢,000 experi- ments. It has been demonstrated that b{ special fertilizing, the use of certain chemicals and other special treatment, the nicotine content of tobacco can be increased to as high as 12 per cent. Equally as interesting is the fact that by close planting and exactly reg- ulated watering tobacco free from nicotine can be grown. The experi- ments are being continued. | Kidwell's Markets, Inc. Read'y for Business With New Admiral Many Quaint Customs Still Cling to Industry of the Isle of Man. By the Asscclated Press. DOUGLAS, Isle of Man.—The Manx herring fleet is all ready for business, with & new admiral. Sir Claude Hill, governor of the Isle of Man, has just appointed Levi Gregor to be admiral of the fleet—an appoint- ment that has been made yearly for generations. The admiral gets £10 a year and his chief duty is to lead the fleet to sea. If he is ill there is a vice admiral, whose salary is £5 & year. Many other quaint customs still cling to the herring industry here. For generations it has been a staple of food on the little island, and it holds an honored place in its official life. When the deemsters, the judges of the island, take their oath, they swear to administer the law as rightly as “the backbone of the herring doth lle in the midst of the fish.” All good peopie pray for the success of their fishermen. The most famous of Manx bishops, Thomas Wilson, drew up in the seventeenth century a special herring prayer which !s still said in every church on the island. Herrings do not play s great a part in the islanders’ diet as once. Up to & few years ago, however, it was the cus- tom of every diligent housewife to buy and pickle several hundred herrings each Autumn. . Then they were strung on a rod and placed against the sunny side of the house. Potatoes and herring, boiled together, made the principal meal of the Manx people during the Fall and Winter. B Fire Bells Without Cost. For the purpose of a fire alarm in small communities, where it is not de- sired to spend money needlessly, sev- eral ingenious ideas are resorted to. A worn-out circular saw answers the pur- posé nicely as do a metal tire from & Jocomotive wheel or a piece of the rail- road track hanging from a suitable support. Short Time—Low Cost E. R.
