NISION WORKERS SHOWN ERATITUDE Wife of Man, Helped to Job, Sends Basket for Other Needy. BY GRETCHEN SMITH. At least one man has a job this year, ive gone to his family on Thanks- ving day from the kind people who the Central Union Mission was sent to one of the army of unemployed. “So frequently we are asked if people take advantage of the assistance given by the mission,” said Mrs. John S. Ben- mett, wife of the superintendent of the mission. “The answer, with few ex< ceptions, is no. In fact, the assistance given to these poor needy ones is preciated deeply and never abused. Taking a neatly written note, on a lined, cheap stationery, from a great pile which lay on her desk, Mrs. Ben- mett _read: “‘I am 80 glad my husband has work this year, and am so thankful I can pass my share to the more needy. “‘I pray God to send His blessings %0 you and Mr. Bennett in abundanc ‘That 15 an answer,” smiled Mrs. Bennett, “to those who claim that gratitude 1s seldom shown us, or that people take advantage of us.” Gratitude Is Typical. Al h the case brought a glim- mer of ht through the clouds of sad stories which daily darken the doors of Central Union Mission, and although the gratitude expressed is typical of many, the story of work found and assistance unneeded is indeed rare this “I think one of the saddest phases brought about through the unemploy- ment situation, is the condition it has caused among children who are brought to us” continued “Mother Bennett,” as the children of the home call the superintendent's wife. “Never, I the 15 years that I have been with the home, have I seen chil- dren 80 un and under- clothed. Recently, four small children were brought to us in such a state of 4l health, that it was necessary to send them to & ital for treatment before we could it them to the home. Their condition was brought ;hou‘t entirely through undernourish- ent. “Just another case of the father hav- ing deserted the mother, probably through desperation at his inability to find work. The children were brought ': us, while the mother seeks a posi- jon.” Baskets Prepared for 350 Families. ‘The Central Union Mission prepared baskets for 350 families this Thanks- giving, to feed approximately 1,200 hungry little children. In each basket ‘were a roast loin of pork, a half peck of potatoes, one can of corn, one can of peas, one can of tomatoes, one head of cabbage, a loaf of bread, two cans of milk, one box of cereal, a half pound of sugar, one pound of coffee, one-half pound of tea, one package of jelly and & can of hes. In addition to the generously filled ets sent to outside families, 40 children now living in the home enjoyed Thanksgiving dinners. “Sometimes, in past years,” Mrs. Ben- nett said, “we have found an occasional tion, i ot ‘meed s Trankeging mea: , not ne a bas- ket as badly as others.
