MINUTE MOLLUSKS ADDED TOMUSELM 2,000,000 Creatures Con- tained in Tiny Vials—Have Weird Life Story. Nea: two million specimens were added this week the zoological col- lection of the National Museum. Approximately 1,265,920 of these an- imals were contained in a mass of three-quarters of a cubic inch at the bottom of a tiny glass vial. Another 568,000 occupled a half cubic inch in & similar vial. Yet they are the young of relatively enormous creatures, it was explained by Dr. Paul Bartsch, curator of mollusks, and only an extraordinary death rate among them makes it possible for the great North American rivers to flow to the sea unhamj . And they have one of the weirdest life stories found in animal creation. ‘The little vials contained the glo- chidia_of two fresh water mollusks of the Upper Mississippi Valley—the Lampstlis anodontoices and the Quad- rula tuberculata. They are of pearly fresh-water mollusks used in the ex- panding pear] button industry and, to- gether with their close relations, are one of the greatest resources of the fresh waters of Eastern North America, says Dr Bartsch. The shells of the adult may be from 3 to 4 inches in diameter. Attaches to Fish. These creatures begin _life, Dr. Bartsch explained, when they hatch from the s in the gills of the adult mollusk. #ey are retained in the gills until they reach the so-called glochidial represented by the present speci- mens. Then they are cast forth into the water to shift for themselves. Each has already & paired shell, like an adult elam or oyster. But the little creature is not prepared g‘b to make its independent way in ic organism lies, back down, on the mm. r‘g“ shell open, and a fine mu- Daughter, 11, Boss Of Stern Dictator Who Rules Poland || Jadwiga Pilsudski Gov- erns ‘Iron Man’ at Home With Childish Appeal. WARSAW (#).—Jadwiga, age 11, is the dictator in Marshal Pilsudski's home. She is the boss of Poland's “iron man.” The marshal is renowned for his love of his two daughters—Wanda, 13, and Jadwiga. This parental love is in marked contrast to the stern martial figure of the dictator. The Pilsudski girls adore their dad and confide in him all their live in- terests. A few years ago the marshal had to admire "their dolls and help to feed them from empty cups with imaginary tea. Now the girls are at school and, in spite of his state burdens, they keer the dictator their studies. ‘When the new school year began this Fall the marshal was in session with several cabinet ministers on an important matter concerning the forth- coming elections for Parliament. Suddenly the two girls burst into the room, It appeared that instead of going straight home after their first school day they decided that they must tell their dad right away of their first impressions of new teachers and new classmates. ‘The marshal excused himself before the cabinet ministers, interrupted the conference and had a chat with his girls for half an hour. When the creature comes contact with the fins or gills or scales of the fish the shell snaps tcgether, firmly attaching the parasite to its host. The whole happening is too insignificant to attract the Tl!klen'ilunk of :he fish. Everything goes like clock-work. nu{":flume spot of irritation is created which then is acted xron by a juice secreted by the glochidium. This eats away the little cavity in the tissue of the fish in which the developing mollusk secretes itself and dwells in comfort and safety until it has developed suffi- ciently to venture uj an independent life of its own. At the end of its para- site stage it drops out of the body of the fish. Must Have Right Host. The fish, Dr. Bartsch points out, serves the microscopic creature not only as & home, but & means of transporta- tion. In this way a species is dis- tributed over a considerable area, lim- ited only by the habitat of its host. One of the most curious facts, Dr. Bartsch says, is that each species of mollusk appears usually to attach itself to only one variety of fish. Dr. Bartsch himseif demonstrated this with the mhws of the sand clams and gold- ‘The little creatures climbed onto the gills and fins of the goldfish, but in 24 hours all had dropped t just ‘wasn't their kind of fish. This, he says, is of great importance to industry, be- it makes it necessary in order to ntroduce & new variety of mollusk in region to have there already the sort fish which it will accept as the host of its parasite days. During this process, he explained, there are many missteps on the part of the glochidia—and it would be a out of their channels over the country- | side, n':g the whole economy of nature ‘The specimens were transferred to the National Museum from the Bureau of Pisheries, to which Dr. Bartsch is| temporarily detailed, to take charge of | the survey of the pear] mussel industry ordered by Congress in 1907.
