DESEN O VALOR NEDAL APPROVED Soldiers’ Medal 1 Will Be Awarded Soldiers for| ' Heroism Not Involving Contact With Enemy. The Secretary of War today an- nounced his approval of the design se- lected by the Commission of Fine Arts for the Soldler's Medal, authorized by | act of Congress to be presenied by the President for heroi:m displayed whils Dot involving actual contact with an enemy. The medal is awarded to any per- son who, while serving in any capacity with the Army of the United States, | including the National Guard and the | organized Reserves, has distinguished | himself or herself. Out of several designs submitted by | medalists from all over the country, | the one finally selected was submitted by_Gaetana Cecere of New York C The approved medal will be of bronze, octagonal in shape. The obverse illus- trates an eagle displayed standing o) of leaves, with the inscription “Soldi: Medal—For Valor.” The medal will be suspended from a ribbon of blue with | 13 alternate white and red stripes. Only | one medal will be issued to any one | person, but for each succeeding deed or act sufficient to justify the award | of the Soldier's Medal, an oak leaf cluster will be authorized for attach- ing to the suspension ribbon. The Secretary of War has decided that the Soldier's Medal will rank fourth in order of precedence. * Thirty-two awards of the Soldier's Medal already have been made, and it is expected that manufacture of the newly designed decoration will be com- | menced shortly so that issues may be | made within a few months to those to whom the medal has been awarded.
