NEW YORK, November 13.—Business men and bankers who continue to talk about cheap money in the United States should bb‘i)n:l.nd wwmh]::lnth'ehl’ th: average prices touc! owes! levuls of the year on November 8. The situation is not healthy. English sterling is now practically at the point where it Is possible to export gold to the United -States. As a result of this, and the continued withdrawal of gold by France, money is stiffening consid- erably in England at the present time. No country in modern times has ever recovered from a business depression without a big bond market, and the United States certainly has had no bond merket o far upon which to base busi- ness recovery. RICHARTSON. % | Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 1:'—Bonds were firm all around today in a small volume of trading. There was a some- what more cheerful undertone, as the heavy load of forced selling was lifted and well secured issues were permitted to adjust themselves to the curtalled investment demand. However, there was still a pronounced tendency to confine cimmitments to the gilt-edge group and short term securi- ties. Money rates were unchanged. ‘The opening was irregular and quiet, with the only advances shown by the high-grade group. Southern Pacific 4138, Chesapeake & Ohio 4!5s, Chicago, Burlington & Quincy general 4s, Nickel Plate 4148, Standard Ofl of New Jer- sey 5s, Philadelphia Co.’s 5s and the entire group of United States Govern- ment obligations made gains. Treasury 33s of 1947 touched a new peak for the year. As the session wore on, this movement became more pronounced and good progress was made by the seasoned investment favorites in their return to the highest levels of the year. Convertibles fluctuated in an inde- terminate fashion, Alleghany 5s, Com- mercial Investment Trust 5l;s, Texas Corporation 5s, International Cement 5s and Warner Bros. 6s making small gains, while others had fractional de- clines. Most of the junior ralls made small upturns from the low levels at which Wednesday's heavy liquidation left them. But trading was dull and it was evident that demand was very small. St. Paul Adjustments, St. Paul 5s, Den- ver & Rio Grande Western 5s, Erie general lien 4s, Erie 5s, International Great Northern Adjustments, Frisco 4155, Seaboard Air Line 6s and Western eryhnd 4s improved. Industrials such fle Copper 7s, International P-per -'u. Nnuoml Dairy Products 5%s, Good year 5s, Phillips Petroleum 5%s md Hudson & Manhattan Income 5s had similar upward moves. The lack of interest in secondary and tertiary descriptions is well illustrated + | by the current quotation for Consolida- tion Coal of Maryland refunding 5s. ‘While the company’s earningd have shown a large decrease from the 1929 figure, which was just sufficient to cover fixed charges, the assets securing the bonds are ample. It is considered prob- able that the company will find means to take care of its bonds, which, with the retirement of $3.796,000 of prior lien 4'5s, will be a first mortgage on the company's properties. The retire- ment of the 4!>s is provided for and there are $20,698,000 of the refunding bonds outstanding against tangible assets of 2.2 times that amount. PSR iy BY LEMUEL F. PARTON. Speclal Dispatch to The Star. s NEW YORK, November 13.—A year ™ ago today, with the crowd on the Stock Exchange milling around like & herd ot wild mavericks, a representative of 'J. H. Holmes & Co. quietly shoved in an order for 1,000,000 shares of Standard Oll of New Jersey at 50. It was wiils- pered around the exchange that the Rockefellers had put in this order. The stock had reached 50, with only 1,200 shares sold at this price. ‘There were no takers of the 1,000,- 000-share bid. The stock closed &t 5()", , Off 3%. The danger was over. t that particular instant the great re mnon became an orderly retreat In- stead of arout and a riot. Excited vis- itors In the gallery may not have known it, but they were in on some big historical doings. Little Excitement Now. Today there were few visitors in the gallery. As Standard Oil of New Jer- sey jogged along just above 50 after falling to 49 earlier in the week, deal- TS “l"nld and asked their matey er they had heard the one abov{ the strong man and the margin clerl ‘There was & o in the lounge swa ping yarns. According to comparative totals ol market values of all stocks on the ex- change, the period of a little more than a year since the big slumz has win- nowed about $34,642,766,237 out of this particular accumulation of the national wealth, with the Curb Exchange ac- counting for a few billions more. What- ever melodrama was due or incidental in this process was enacted all at once, to be replaced on the boards y with a brand of realism which discloses the once outmoded law of supply and de- mand again on the job. On the street, in brokers’ offices, in all the gathering places in and around the Nation's Bourse, there ic none of the climatic intensity which marked the moment of the Rockefeller bid. Board rooms, jammed a year ago with excited bankers, bakers, boarding house keepers, stenographers, housewives, millionaires and clerks, are as calm as Lake Placid on a moonlight night. A year ago today it was zero hour on the exchange. Now 1t is just one more day in the trenches. Youth in Big Business. During the last few years the average age of members of the Stock Exchange has been lowered by about 10 years. The era of runzaway finance was the era of youth in big business. Not only on the exchange, but in brokers' firms, bcnks and industry, youngsters scarcely behind the ears were sitting in on 'é(u deals. Stock Exchange seats were ing for around $600,000 ir the boom days, and with the increase in the ex- change membership the youngsters piled in. ‘Today seats are around $225,000. The fl!d‘um are swill there but they are piping do ‘When 1t irbon was pressing hard they let »id Benvenuto Cellini out of jail in the Castle Angelo to take a pot shot at him with an old: fashioned cannon.
