BY F. H. RICHARDSON. Speclal Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 10.—After a firm opening, bond prices turned down- ward again today, most of the list slip- ping into new low ground for the year. This was traceable to no other influence than the stock market. With every other factor favorable, each sag of stocks to new™low levels uncovers more margin calling, resulting into heavy cashing of bonds to proo up crumbling equity accounts. Naturally, no class of bonds held in the portfolic of American investors is exempt from this type of liquidation. In Germany there has been no :hange in the situation, except possibly a further degree of return of confi- dence, yet German issues were sold today because of the action of stocks. Similarly, South American republics are-slowly consolidating their economic position under new governments and their bonds should continue their re- covery. But forced selling sent these issues lower today. Junior domestic securities have long ago discounted the most drastic possible drops in earnings but the slide in stocks pushed them to yet lower levels. High-grade issues were similarly af- fected, though to a lesser extent. ‘The firmness of stocks at the opening was immediately reflected by strength in bonds, leaving no doubt that when the upturn in equities does come, the response of the bond list will be prompt and emphatic. In the later selling seasoned invest- ment favorities such as New York Cen- tral 4s, Frisco A 4s, Union Pacific first 4s, Chesapeake Corporation 5s, Nickel Plate 4!)s, Inland Steel 4';s, Standard Oil of New Jersey 5s, Columbia Gas 5s, Utah Power & Light 5s and Interna- Telephone 55 all sagged. United States Government securitics were moderately active and firm, re- sponding to the Treasury offering of 8125000000 of 91-day discount bills. These are expected to be sold at a record low price and there was some switching into long-term issues as a result. Convertible bonds were weak, with drops in Alleghany 5s, Baltimore & Ohio 1 & Northwestern 4%s, American Telephone 41;s, Texas Corporation 5s and Gen- eral Theaters Equipment 6s.
