SAN FRANCISCO, November %7.—De- claring the Fox West Coast theaters a “trust attempting to stifie the highest 1 development of motion pictures,” nine motion picture stars yesterday an- nounced no more United Artists pictyres would be shown through the Fox -or- ganization until it changes its policy. The actors sald the Fox houses, con- trolling 90 per cent of Pacific Coast theaters, refused to buy pictures for a price which would permit United Ar- tists to produce artistic films of high quality. -Refusing to sacrifice their art, the actors asserted they would show their pictures in tents rather than sub- mit to the demands of “an arrogant monopoly.” West Coast theater representatives here said they were not taking the charges too seriously. “We haven’t shown many United Ar- tists’ pictures in the last year, and the last ones were not particularly success- ful,” Charles N. Thall, assistant division manager of the Fox organization, com- mented. ‘The United Artists’ declaration was signed by Charles Chaplin, Mary Pick- ford, Douglas Fairbanks, Norma Tal- madge, Gloria Swanson, D. W. Griffith, Eddie Cantor, Al Jolson and Ronald Colman. ORA PALKIN, Attorney.
