ODAWARA, Japan (N.AN.A.).—For 50 years Mrs. Toki Goto, 71, has, rung the great bell that tells time for Oda- wara, in the foothills of the Hakone Mountains, and only three timkes in that half century has it falled to peal exactly on the moment. Mrs. Goto rings the bell at 6 .m., noon and 6 pm. During the first few years of her service there was not a clock in the village, and time was meas- ured by burning incense sticks. Later there were three clocks in the village, and then, seven years ago, Mrs. Goto bought an alarm clock, which she com- pares with the town clock a half hour before time to ring. Her salary is $10 a month, and she expects to keep the job until she is 100, when she will retire in favor of some one younger. (Coprright, 1930. by North American New paper Allfance.) MADRID, October 30.—The pre= sumptive future King of Spain, the Prince of Asturias, eldest son of Alfonso XIII, after being an inv:lid most of his 23 years, is back home from Euro- pean travels, greatly improved in health. Always heretofore it has been gene erally assumed that because of his health, the prince could never hope to occupy the thron<. Now it is pre- sumed tat he could do so. King Overjcred. The King himself is overjoyed at the change and persons ciose o the court say there have been few Summers as happy in Don Alfonso's life as this . He has, for the first time, seen his eldest son traveling over Europe, as the King himself loves to do, visit- ing also the provinces of Spain. The trips were the first the prince had ever taken abroad: in fact he had Journeyed little even in his home land. He visited France, Switzerland and a bit or Northern Italy besides appears ing in several sections of Spain which he had never seen before. While his health, commencing last Spring. showed steady improvement, doctors, with professional caution, de- cline to state positively that he has been cured of haemophilia, which has been the bane of the young man’s life. Russian Heir Suffered From Same Malady. This is the disease which also af- flicted the former Crown Prince of Rus- sla. It is manifested by excessive bleeding from the slightest scratch, but injections to fortify the blood stream and systems of exercise have seemingly worked wonders with the Spanish hefr, The Prince of Asturias has the same desire as his father to visit the Ameri- cas, both North and South. But almost & year would be required for such & Jjourney and King Alfonso has never felt it would be wise to leave his realm that long. But the prince, if he eon- tnues to gain strength and if no ad- verse domestic political conditions arise, may be able to make the trip some time.
