DEATH TRAP VIEWS GIVEN BY MAYOR {DOfflcial, However, Leaves in! Doubt Alexandria’s Stand on Elimination. #Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. ALEXANDRIA, Va., October 30.—Just how far this city is willing to go in | onnection with the elimination of the | Four-Mile Run “death trap” on the Alexandria-Washington Highway, which has been the scene of numerous acci- dents since the widening of the Arling- | iton County portion of the road, was still g‘douht following a statement of Mayor rroll Pierce before City Council at the | Fegular meeting held yesterday after- | Hopes for Elimination. Pierce said that it was the hope of Oouncil to eliminate the danger spot, ¥despite the fact.that the State High- tway Commission has said_that the city would not co-operate.”” The city has in the past, however, been opposed to | spending its share of the amount neces- sary to widen the culvert, and the state- ment of the mayor gave no indication $hat this attitude has been changed. All members of City Council, City Manager Lawrence and City Attorney’ Budwesky were named to attend the conference called on invitation of Ar- lington County officials, to be held with J. C. Albright, district’ engineer of the State Highway Commission, at the *“death trap” at 4 p.m. November 3. A communication from W. H. Duncan, elerk of Arlington County, in regard to the conference and indorsing the reso- lution passed by the Arlington County Board of Supervisors calling on the State and the City of Alexandria to correct it, was read. City Manager Lawrence is expected o offer a plan at the conference where- by the road will be narrowed gradually on the Arlington County side and the foad at this point well lighted. Discrimination Alleged. The attitude of City Council regard- ng this road has always been that the city was discriminated against when the road was built. It is contended that the State had prepared to build the road to the old city line, but when the annexation proceedings were start- ed the work was delayed so that in case the city won only the coufty portion would be fixed, which was later done. Evidence of this attitude on the part ©f the city is seen in the fact that Mount Vernon avenue, which is the up- r and more roundabout road to ashington under present conditions, was widened and resurfaced by the city: yecently and plans are now being made to widen the Four-Mile Run Bridge on this highway in conjunction with Ar- lington County.
