NEW YORK, September 27.—High- grade industrials and one or two of the utilities put up a good show of re sistance in today's stock market, but the list as & whole went into new low ground on the movement, with the greatest pressure against the rails, the oils and the metal stocks. ‘When the selling was at its height the averages came down approximately to the June low, but this indication was canceled by the subsequent hardening. American Can was the leader of the , | upturn, with United States Steel, West- lnfhouu Electric and Consolidated Gas following along. Selling was heaviest in the first hour and the resistance strongest in the late dealings. American Can was the lead- er on the recovery and United States Steel held well. The rally, however, was disappointingly feeble. The best that could be said was that losses were. much smaller in number of points than they had been in the preceding ses- slons. Olls were excessively weak and so were the coppers, but it was the raiis which ylelded most significantly today. No other explanation was needed than the August earnings statements, a new batch of which came to hand during the morning. To take only two in- stances, Atchison reported gross for August of $19,961,236, against $26,285,« 628 in the same month a year ago, and & net of $5749,712, against $8,543,670. Baltimore & Ohio had an August of $18,400,989, compared with $22,50, 046 in August, 1929, and a net of $4,- 473,226, against $5,315,884, Atchison slumped 5 or 6 points. Baltimore & Ohio made a new yeas low. A large block of Pennsylvan! came out at 70, after which the quota- tion also dipped into new low ground for this year.. New Haven was weak and so was Rock Island and Canadian Pacific. It was difficult to avoid the conclusion that this selling was mot meréhy for short account but repre- sented discouraged lquidation. Metal stocks were ly offered and the two leaders, Anaconda and Kenne- t, made new 1930 lows. In the ofl list Atlantic Refining, Phillips, Pure Oil, Skelly, Texas Corporation and Standard of New York sold under lnythl.fi recorded before this year. Standard New Jersey had a substantial setback.
