In each ntificate on its utmml feast, as if it were his own particular cathedral, as a sign of his supremacy over all the ehurches of the world, in the East as well as the West. ‘The Basilica of St. Paul represents the church of Alexandria; that of St. Mary the Greater (Sta. Maria Maggiore) the church of Antioch; St. Lawrence with- out the Walls—the church of Jeru- salem, and St. Peter of the Vatican— the church of Constantinople, just as 8t. John Lateran, the true cathedral church of Rome represents the Pa- triarchate of the West. Every visitor to Rome seems to take home with him the special memory. of this basilica, and pothing is more frequent than to hear allusions to it by travelers who linger as lovingly over it as they are supposed to linger over the famous fountain of Trevi. Most of the architectural details in the tribune of St. Paul's Basilica date back only to the second qusmr of the present century, when, the edifice was act to restored after its destruction by fire. The beautiful mosaics of the thirteenth century still remain, but have had to be retouched. They represent Our Lord with the Holy Innocents at His feet, St. Peter on His right hand, Sts. Paul and Luke on the left, and lower down the twelve apostles and the Angels of the Resurrection. The altar, of white Carrara marble, was carved in the same century by Arnolfo del Camblo, the most eminent among the puplls of Nicholas of Pisa. The canopy above the altar is made of the same material and it is supported by four alabaster pillars which were the con- tribution of the Sublime Porte, through Hehemet All, Pasha of Egypt, toward the restoration of this magnificent monument of Christian antiquity. Beneath the altar is the Confession, hollowed some feet below the level and occupled by a small altar. In the ancient Basilica this was of pure sil- ver, and was the gift of the Emperor Valentinian III. The triumphal arch between the nave and the tra; t s adorned on the side toward the tribune with a mosaic reprue?tln' Our Lord adored by the Twenty-four Elders and the Four Beasts of the Apocalypse; on the opposite face He appears standing betweenl the Apostles St. Peter and St. Paul METHODISTS HERE WILL HEAR BISHOP Presiding Officer of Confer- ence to Occupy Mount Ver- non Place Pulpit.
