RALEIGH HABERDASHER 1310 F Street STEDMAN FUNERAL RITES TOMORROW Patriarch of House Will Be Buried in Fayetteville Cemetery. Maj. Charles Manly Stedman, last veteran in Congress of the blue and gray hosts which battled in 1861-65, will be laid to rest in his home town of Fayetteville, N, C., tomorrow morn- ing following funeral services at the First Presbyterian Church in the North Carolina city. The body of the Representative will lie in state at the Zurhorst funeral home, 301 East Capitol street, until about 11 o'clock, when it will be sent to Fayetteville on a train leaving the Capital at 12:10 o'clock tonight. Representative Since 1911, Maj. Stedman had been Representa- tive of the fifth North Carolina district since March 4, 1911. His death came in what was to have been his retire- ment term in Congress. He had de- cided not to run for office again and his name was omitted from the June primary ballot in North Carolina for the first time since he entered Congress back in 1911. He suffered an apoplectic stroke on September 9, and at that time his phy- sicians declined to predict his recovery. He lost strength steadily until last week, when his doctors reported a slight re- covery. His recovery was brief, however, and when he relapsed, he weakened rapidly and succumbed. Fought Under Lee. Maj. Stedman was born at Pittshoro, N. C. on January 28, 1841. He entered the Confederate Army when he was 20, and campaigned under both Jackson and Lee. When the war was over, he took up the practice of law. He first ran for public office in 1884, four years after he attended his first Democratic National Convention. He was defeated for the governorship of his State by a small majority, and was elected Lieutenant Governor. At his bedside, since the stroke, had been his daughter and personal secre- tary, Mrs, Katherine Palmer, of Greens- boro, N. @, who had supervised his affairs since the death of his wife 10 years ago.
