n—16 ‘GLEN SHULTZ WINS AUTO HILL CLIMB Conqguers Pikes Peak Course, . but Fails to Break His ; Own Record. By the Associated Press. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Sep- tember 2 (#).—Glen Shultz again has led other conquerors of the steep and tortuous road which leads 14,109 feet into the clouds to the summit of famed Pikes Peak. He roared up the 12 miles of precipi- tous grades in 18 minutes 85 seconds yesterday to win the twelfth annual Labor day automobile hill climb. Shultz averaged better than 40 miles an hour. Despite excellent road condi- tions, he failed to break the course rec- ord, Set by himself in 1928, of 17 min- utes 41.6 seconds. Riding with the 14 drivers who flashed over the course was the handi- cap of heavy grades, sharp curves and rarified air, which robs the motor of wer. The racing cars flashed around airpin curves, w] here a skid would have meant a drop of hundreds of feet. Louls Unser came in behind ghe leader in 18:37.4. Robert Mason Wwas third; Angelo Cimino, fourth, and Ed McConglogne, fifth. Shultz’s victory yesterday was his sixth, and he was placed in the money thres other times since starting his hill- climbing career in 1921 In the light stock car class W. F. Shepherd was first in 24:188. L. L. Bowser was second in 25 Edward Phillips had competition in the heavy stock car class and took his time to finish in 29:18.4. Shultz wen $1,250 cash for first place. ‘The Perffose trophy was awarded to Shepherd for the best time in the stock car class.
