"The Department of Justice has an- mounced an extension of the Federsl probation system by the appointment of 45 probation officers in addition to the nine now serving. Appropriations for this purpose were approved at the last session of Con- gress, and the deartment has now de- cided where the men will be stationed. No mention of who the appointees may be was made. Two probation officers will be as- m;d to each of the following dis- : Massachusetts, Southern New York, Eastern Pennsylvania, Western Pennsylvania, Southern West Virginia, Minnesota, Eastern Kentucky and Northern Tllinois. One Officer Assigned to Each. The following districts will have one probation officer each: Southern Ala- bama, Arizona, Eastern Arkansas, Northern California, Southern Florida, Northern and Southern Georgia, South- ern Illinois, Northern Indiana, South- crn Iowa, Western Kentucky, Eastern Louisiana, Maryland, Eastern and West- ern Mihigan, Eastern and Western Missourl, Montana, Nebraska, New Jer- sey, New Mexico, Eastern, Northern and Western New York, Eastern North Carolina, Northern Ohio, Northern Oklahcma, Western South Carolina, South Dakota, Western Tennessee, Eastern, Southern and Northern Texas, Western Washington. No appointments can be made in other districts, the department said, until Congress makes further appropriations. Aims to Reduce Congestion. The program is intended to reduce congestion in the Pederal prisons and the department. expects it also to prove a measure of economy. It said a single probation officer at $4,000 a year can supervise 100 probationed prisoners, who would require an outlay of $25,000 a year if kept in prison. MARINE AIRPLANE CRASHES AT 0COTAL Son of John B. Stetson, Jr., Who Had Just Bid Parents Good-By, Escapes Uninjured.
