B_12 s PORTS NG Wood to Build "‘Fastest Boat” ‘SURE T WL MAKE 100 MILES AN HOLR | Work on America IX Slated| to Be Started Within Next Two Weeks. By the Associated Press. ETROIT, August 5—Gar Wood of the Silver King of American speed boat- ing and successful de- fender of the Harmsworth Trophy against foreign invasion since 1920, will launch a new boat—the Miss America IX—within two weeks. He believes that his new craft will be the first ever to do 100 miles an hour. ‘Wood decided to build the Miss Amer- ea IX after visiting Gravenhurst, On- tario, last week and witnessing trial runs of Estelle IV and Estelle V, with which Miss Marion Barbara Carstairs, English sportswoman, will challenge for the Harmsworth Trophy at Detroit Au- gust 30. “I can say that England's chances look better this year than any time since 1921,” Wood said. The Estelle V believed to be the slower of the two boats, has done better than 90 miles an hour in trials. The Miss Amer- jca VIIL with which Wood had ex- pected to defend the Harmsworth Tro- phy, has done 94 miles an hour, but its Tecord was eclipsed by the mark of 96.7 made by the late Sir Henry Segrave just before his death at Lake Winde- mere, in England. Wood is desirous of regaining the world speed record, as well as successfully defending 'the Harmsworth Trophy. The Estelle V also s conceded a chance of doing 100 sniles an_hour or better. Wood said he expected to announce plans for the Miss America IX at a Three beauties landed recently by Charles M. Schneider and John W. Hurley off Tilghmans Island, weighing 32, 45 and 54 pounds, respectively. meeting of the Gold Cup Committee here Thursday. This craft will not be the first built by Wood in less than a month. On one other occasion he com- pleted a Miss America in two weeks and used it for a _successful defense of the ‘Harmsworth Trophy. OLYMPIC CLUB TRACK COMBINATION WRECKED By the Associated Press. YANKEE, ENTERPRISE SAIL IMPRESSIVELY By the Assoclated Press MATTAPOISETT, Mass., August 5.— Radical rearrangement of standings on paper of the four candidates for the honor of defending the America’s Cup were in order today as they went to the starting line for the fourth day of the IR annual New York Yacht Club cruise. Yankee, sailed by John Lawrence and Chandler Hovey, resumed competition with her reputation as an able heavy- weather boat more firmly established than ever as a result of her victory yesterday in a 28-mile breeze. Bul Enterprise, sailed by Harold S. Vanderbilt, after her close second, bid fair to demand recognition as an excel- lent all-round boat. She has been re- garded as a light-weather craft, but her performance yesterday, when she showed she was able to take care of her- self in the strongest breeze the cup boats have yet encountered, must have given the committee selecting the de- fender something to think about. Whirlwind finished third yesterday, and Weetamoe, the Morgan-Nichols candidate, last, after picking up a mem- ber of her crew Who 1l overboard. BRITISH YACHTS PICKED TO TACKLE U. S.
