Created by an act of the First Con- {;ess which was approved by President ashington himself, the Coast Guard or the Revenue Marine, as it originaily was known, actually was the first armed force afloat of the Nation. The Reve- nue Marine subsequently became the Revenue Cutter Service and, by an act of January 28, 1915, it was united with the United States Life Saving Service and was given the designation it bears today. In war time, the Ccast Guard is an tmportant unit of national defense and in peace it devotes ils energies to saving life and property from the perils of the sea. In this latter work the Coast Guard established a new record during the past year by saving over 6,000 per- sons and by aiding vessels valued at $50,000,000. Besides its work of actual life and ship saving, the Coast Guard, with its personnel of 12,000 officers and men, performs numerous other tasks leading to its primary purpose. Derelicts are removed from ship lanes; icebergs are reported, and, whenever possible, are blown up; seal herds in the North Pacific and the Bering Sea are guarded against poachers, and smugglers are combated. It is under this latter head that falls the Coast Guard's work in prohibition enforcement. Less impor- tant is the service'’s work in patroling marine regattas. ‘The Coast Guard also enforces the motor boat laws. It furnishes medical aid to deep-sea fishermen and helps locate schools of fish. The progress of airplanes is checked by the Coast Guard through its 2,650 miles of coastal communication system which connects all its stations and a great number of lighthouses, naval radio-compass sta- tions and Weather Bureau stations in & contact stream that bands the stra- coast section of the United States. all its activities, the Coast Guard endeavors to abide by its historic motto, “Semper Paratus’—“Always Ready.” TWO KILLED, 13 HURT * IN WRECK OF TRAIN Derailment of Passenger Cars Near Vernon, Tex., Caused by Disrupted Track.
