FEAR CALIFORNIA HEAT WILL GROW Hot Desert Blasts to Add to Temperatures Costing Seven Lives. By the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES, July 18.—Socuthern California today faced the prospect of hot blasts sweereng in from the Mojave Desert to intensify the heat responsible for seven deaths in five days and the first death by sunstroke recorded here in 23 years. ‘Weather Bureau officials said an area of low pressure over Arizona and lower California would reach this vicinity today, taking the place of a breeze which somewhat alleviated the discom- fort here yesterday. The death of Lloyd Eldridge, 28, oil field worker, prostrated whilegon a der- rick at Montebello, was announced by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office as the first death from sunstroke recorded here in 23 years. ‘Three of the decths attributed to heat were in Imperial Valley, below sca leveel. The mercury hovered at 110 through- out the Imperial Valley and reached 103 at Ontario, Calif. Riverside swel- tered under a 100 degree temperature and Pomona éexperienced 96 degrees. By the Associated Press. BALTIMORE, July 18.—Clarence Preston, 14, and his 12-year-old cousin, Howard Bloom, yesterday admitted to police they placed a spike on the rails of the Pefinsylvania’ Railroad track, re- sulting in the derailing of the Jocomo- tive, baggage car and two passenger coaches of a crack express as it en- tered Baltimore Wednesday afternoon. No one was injured when the loco- motive of the Baltimore-bound express plunged from the rails, ploughed up several hundred feet of track and final- 1y flopped over on its side, pulling the following cars with it. The two youths were .arrested and questioned today and readily admitted | their act. They said they had been in |ff ~ the habit of placing pennies and other objects on the rails for the trains to flatten out. _ Vesterday track spikes were their playthings, and, tired of waiting for a train after placing them, they left the Scene to go swimming.
