By the Associated Press. | CHICAGO, July 7.—The record of one of man's earliest efforts to cast off the drag of primitive superstition in favor of intelligent observations of life and death will be made available by the University of Chicago press next week. The university today announced its plans for publication of a two-volume edition of the Edwin Smith surgical papyrus, an early Egyptian document, dated about 2700 B.C., and composed probably by Imhotep, great surgeon and architect of the Pharaohs. In the past 16 months, he said, more progress has been made toward strengthening the foundations for world peace than had been achieved in many years. The consequences of the treaty, Tem- | ple said, “both from the points of view | of adequate defense of the United | States and for general world peace, constitute the most notable step in international relations during the past decade.” Temple directed attention to “the mobilization of international public opinion, at the instance of the United States, in the controversy between Rus- sia and China,” both signatories to the Kellogg pact. Again, he continued, “as a‘ conse- quence of the President’s good will mis- sion to South America, a method was developed for settlement of the Tacna- Arica dispute between Chile and Peru.” Stresemann Monument Started. Dates Back Thousands of Years. ‘The papyrus is a copy made by a scribe about 1700 B.C. of a book writ- ten about a thousand years earlier. One column of hieroglyphics at the begin- ning is lost and the scribe broke off suddenly in the middle of a word. Later he returned and copied on the back a hodge-podge - of treatments for the complexion and another, and later scribe added a prescription for an oint- ment to remove the wrinkles of old age. Edwin Smith bought the papyrus from Egyptian natives in 1862 and it is now the property of the New York Historical Soclety. This is its first publication, although it has been known among medical men and Orientalists for years. LARGEST U. CHICAGO, July 7.—Willlam Allen, Western traffic manager for the United States Lines, announced yesterday that contracts had been awarded for the construction of the largest liner ever built in the United States.
