FINANCIAL. “GURB LIST LOWER IN'DULL SESSION Accumulation of Selling Or- ders Over Holiday Sends Prices Downward. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Epecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, July 7.—A series of unfavorable week end news develop- ments, coupled with the weak close of last Thursday's market, caused an ac- cumulation of week end selling orders that resulted in a dull and declining session on the Curb Exchange today. Although trading continued light, prices steadily slipped. Public utilities proved the biggest disappointment. ers had antici- pated a substantial rally in this group immediately, following the adjournment of Congress, as it is generally believed that mergers involving such companies as Electric Bond & Share and its as- sociates, Niagara Hudson Power and United Light & Power and their re- spective affiliates, will be attempted this Summer. Bond and Share Off. Electric Bond & Share, after opening off 214 points on a block of 3,000 shares, continued to decline. American Super- power, Niagara Hudson Power, United Light & Power A, Middle West Utili- ties, Consolidated Gas of Baltimore and Brazilian Light & Traction also de- clined. Cities Service was down almost ® point and Goldman Sachs lost more than a point. The Army award of $11,299,978 of airplane contracts stimulated trading in the stocks of plane manufacturers. Con- solidated Alrcraft, Detroit Aircraft and Fokker Aircraft, which were not men- tioned in the Army awards, slightly re- acted, but Irving Air Chute and other companies advanced. The report of ‘Transcontinental Air Transport, show- ing that 30,000 passengers had been carried, falled to benefit that stock. Aluminum Co. of America with a drop of 20 points on four transactions registered the widest break in the higher-priced industrials during the forenoon. A. O. Smith Corporation led the up-side of the group by scorig a gain of 10% points, BONDS ON THE CURB les DOMESTIC BONDS. aundreds Gas 65 2 Abpalac oy 5B 4 Arkans P & L 58 Asso Electric %35 '53 2 memeSara1aSts A: Tel, Um 5',. C, MONDAY, LARGE FORD DEAL INTTALY REPORTED With Isotta- Fraschini Points to Big Op- erations Despite Tariff. BY RALPH E. FORTE. By Cable to The Star and Chicago Dally News. ROME, Italy, July 7.—In a far-reach- ing agreement which, according to in- formation from Milan, has been reach- ed by the Ford Motor Co. and Isotta- Fraschini, the manufacture of Ford au- JULY 1930. WHEAT TUMBLES Big Increa in Visible Supply nds Prices to New Lows. CHICAGO, July 7 (#).—Confronted by a big increase of the United States wheat visible supply, wheat today tum- bled down to record-breaking new low price levels. The domestic stock of i wheat in sight showed millions of bushels enlargement for the last week. Furthermore, export demand for wheat from North America during the mple holiday was disappointingly small. Dragged down by wheat, the oats mar- ket today also fell to dep'.ha heretofore unreached this season. Wheat closed nervous, bushel lower than Thursday’s finish. Corn closed 73al3c down, oats, 7sallac off, and provisions varying from 20c| decline to a rise of 15c. S VHEAT— Eembe: December . CORN— Er T September December . 21,a2%¢c¢ a| tomobiles in Italy on a scale of mass uDATS— production is envisaged. The agreement, which will have an important influence on the future relations of the two powerful concerns, was reached after negotiations beginning last March. The plan, which is understood to have the government's approval, affords means whereby Ford can counteract the new prohibitive tariff, which the government has slapped on foreign au- tomobiles, and will thus break up the monoply which the Fiat Co. would otherwise have had in the lower-priced car fleld. ‘The immense plants in which Italian- built Fords will be turned out will be equipped with Ford machinery shipped direct from Detroit. Italian officials hope that ultimately all parts will be completely manufactured in Italy, but during the first months of operation, 30 per cent of the parts—in other words, the moter, steering gear and transmis- sion—will ‘be shipped rough cast from America and then finished in these new plants. Under article 2 of the new tariff de- cree, the high rates on rough cast parts are suspended under certain circum- stances until the end of December. It is believed that the government will prolong the existence of this special dispensation until Isotta-Fraschini no longer requires a certain percentage of vital rough cast parts to carry out its program. Mr. Sorenson, export manager in De- troit for Fords, and Sir Percival Perry, chairman of Fords, Motors, Ltd., will arrive in Milan next week to perfect the detalls of the arrangement with Commendatore Cella, general manager for Isotta-Fraschini. (Copyright, 1930.) RAW SUGAR QUIET Prices Little Easier Today in the Futures Trading. NEW YORK, July 7 (#).—Raw sugar was quiet and unchanged early today at 3.30 for spots, duty paid, and no sales reported. The easier ruling of London over the American holiday and the inactivity in the spot market seemed to restrict any aggressive buying in raw futures, d as a result prices were a little easier under liquidation and some sell- ing by houses with trade and European connections. The volume of business, however, was only of small proportions and after opening 1 to 2 points lower prices continued within that range and at midday showed no change from initial In refined, a good withdrawal de- mand was reported, but no new busi- ness, and prices were unchanged at 4.70 for fine granulated. Dying Race of Gorillas. ‘The gorillas of the British hills of Africa are dying out, principally from the ravages of big game hunters who kill for the mere pleasure of it. The animals are given some degree of gov- ernmental protection in some parts of the African continent, but on account of the dificulties of guarding the coun- try the protection does not amount to much. The Nigerian groups are some- what larger, but are being decreased rapidly by the hum:ers The natives, as a rule, are not in sympathy with thic slaughter, for they regard the animals with friendly interest. It is only on r & occasions that they show any in- clination to attack humans. The gorilla units confine their movements to cer- tain well defined limits, and they roam about the country harmless and quietly. As & rule they keep to the country, which is somewhat inaccessible, and make excursions into the inhabited por- tions only when driven there by the un- Ilvorlble conditions existing in the high countries. The native regard for these animals may be based upon superstition Yitos oerwn extent, and it is quite com- mon for the native tanner to refuse to touch the pelts brought to them by hunters. 3‘\ the northern or Hayonsa area thete is only one known troop of 25 in- dividuals, which has increased in late years owing to the protection now being granted to them. They are far fiercer and more aggressive than the south- erners. Ten years ago they attacked and killed an lnoflemlve man and later they made an attack upon some young goat herds, but these are the oniy in- cidents of this character recorded Tecent years. NEW -YORK, July 7 (#).—Cotton opened steady today at a decline of 2 to 7 points in response to the indiffer- ent showing of Liverpool over the holi- days and rather a bearish view of pri- vate crop advices. Offerings were light, and the market held fairly steady within a point or two of the initial figures at the end of the first half hour, with trading restricted, apparently, by a dispostion to await the Government acreage report, which is due tomorrow. ‘The private reports were issued this morning, one of them placing the de- crease in acreage at only 1 per cent and the condition 73.6 per cent of normal. Another made the decrease in acreage 2.3 per cent, and said the con- dition at the end of June was fair to good, with only few exception, and about the 10-year average.
