NATIONAL 9411 Work Dore in One Dog THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. T, NEW TYPE PLAN ACDURED BY ARMY Craft Being Built at Has- brouck Heights, N. J., to Be Flown Here. One of the most revolutionary types of aircraft ever built for the Army Air Corps is nearing completion and prob- ably will be flown to the National Capi- tal within a few days, it was revealed today when Col. Frank Andrews, execu- tive officer of the training and oper- ations branch of the Army Air Corps, and Maj. Douglas B. Netherwood, finance officer of the Air Corps, left Bolling Field for Hasbrouck Heights, N. J., where the plane is being built in the Fokker plant. The plane is a twin-engined recon- nalssance type to be used for long-range operations at extreme altitudes behind the enemy lines. It will be the first twin-engined observation plane and is expected to be one of the fastest multi- motored planes ever built. It will be of the “flying-wing” type, with motors and fuselage faired into the wing. Designed to carry a crew of three, the new reconnaissance plane will be fully equipped for photographic work, ordi- nary observation and radio communi- cation. Weight will be sacrificed for speed and altitude and the plane will be equipped with very little, if any, de- fensive material, depending for safety upon ability to outclimb or run away from hostile combat planes. It is & highly specialized form of ob- servation plane, designed after a na- tional competition conducted by the Air Corps, to meet the requirements for a plane to be used for the observation of hostile activities far behind the bat- tle front, including munitions plants, training areas, concentration points and other places of military value. Col. Andrews and Maj. Netherwood expetced to be at the Fokker plant by 11 o'clock. They will make arrange- ments for delivery of the plane to the Air Corps. After visiting Bolling Field, where 1t 15 to be inspected by officers of the Afr Corps and War Department of- ficials, the plane will be flown to Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio, for flight testing. The origin of the S O S message | that silenced the broadcast of an at- |\ tack by former Senator James A. Reed of Missours on ‘“The Radio Trust” was still being investigated by the Government today. ~ Discussing _the matter in the Senate yesterday, Sen- ator Dill, Democrat, of Washington, de- clared that the “distress call was made for the purpose of stopping the speech.” W. D. Terrell, chief of the radio division of the Commerce Department, said last night his investigation was already under way. The Radio Cor- poration of America meanwhile in- formed Senator Dill it would make its own investigation of the S O S. ‘The Navy Department reported the order that silenced all stations for 26 minutes after 8:22 p.m. on Saturday was _given by the superintendent of the Naval Radio Station in New York, after he was informed that a distress call had been picked up by the Radio Corporation of America's station at Tuckerton, N. J. Senator Norris, Republican, Nebras- ka, joined Dill in calling attention to the ~resignation of Judge Hugh M. Morris, who would have tried the Gov- ernment’s suit to test legality of radio unification arrangements by 10 cor- porations in the District Court of Delaware. “Wouldn't the radio trust be justified in sending out an S O S, when former Senator Reed began to attack them?” Norris asked ironically. He said Judge Morris' resignation was surrounded by conditions similar to those under which other officials had resigned to accept attractive posts when they were “making it unpleasant” for individuals and corporations, Dill said he “could not believe that an officlal would stoop to so indefensi- ble, s0 contemptible a thing as using the 8 O S, the death call at sea,” to interrupt the speech, but that he be- lieved “it was done by an enthusiast for the purpose of stopping the attack.” He added that the reaction from it would be “more harmful than the speech would have been, forceful as it was.” ‘The Washington Senator said he un- derstood Judge Morris had resigned IMPORTANT - FACTS for every man who shaves X Public acceptance of the New Gillette Blade has proved conclusively that it is the best blade made. 2. It is rust-resisting—needs TUESDAY, 1to enter private legal practice, and that he had “received some flattering offers of retaile: Morris, he said, “has al- ways bee thorn in the side of the radio trust.’ Former Senator Reed's speech, Dill explained, was being broadcast over the Columbia broadcasting chain, a com- petitor of R. C. A. He said it was not “likely” that they would have inter~ rupted the broadcast. After Senator Ashurst suggested that Reed be asked to repeat the address, Dill said that M. H. Aylesworth, presi- dent of the National Broadcasting Co., had offered to ask the former Senator to deliver the speech over his chain. Finland now has seven radio broad- casting stations.
