HOLLYWOOD, June 5 (N.AN.A).— The rage for Westerns and the desire of the theater-going public to get a rest from sullen native girls and red-hot city vamps brings Bret Harte, the great Western classicist, to the screen in a talkie version of “Tennessee’s Pardner.” Buck Jones, one of the Western lads who expected to pass into the discard with talkies and who finds himself riding high as a result of the unexpected turn of events, will play the leading role. And Harry Cohn, a producing gent who has done some interesting things already, is the one to reach into the 5-foot shelf for Bret Harte. The locale of Bret Harte's famous stories is in Northern California—those high Sierras which are still to a large extent untouched by the march of time. ‘There one can find what residents eall “the diggin’s,” scarred stretches of mountainside where the hopeful still work hand sluices, now that placer mining with high water power is for- bidden by law. If Harry Cohn takes movie com- panies up into this territory and cap- tures the primitive charm of these little ing towns, which have remained un- touched through the years, he will bring to the screen something entirely new and vital in outdoor pictures. Claude Allister's strange flair for making a watch disappear out of some one's pocket or mysteriously placing & rose in the buttonhole of some amazed one who hasn't the faintest idea of how 1t got there is a survival of his con- Juror days. 5 Allister, the delightful “silly-ass” Englishman who first scored a talkie * hit with Ronald Colman in “Bulldog Drummond” and has kept his record topnotch in each succeeding appear- ance, is a son of Gen. Palmer. He is one of those born to a strange longing for footlights—one who has carried out his yearning despite opposi- tion of family and friends, and one who = justifying his calling splendidly these ays. s 8lim, patrician and with the type of humor which puts him in a subtle group, and thereford especially valuable in a day of talk, he has one of the most interesting British accents of any of the Hollywood players. . This |is in gréat demand by the very young | set, 6 to 14 mostly. “All Quiet,” as the Remarque classic | has come to be familiarly termed by that Hollywood which loves to shorten things and which adores the palliness of nicknames, is going to be made in a | German version. None of the boys who played in it | speak German; at least none of the principals, certainly not Lew Ayres nor young Bakewell, But they are memoriz- ing their lines parrot fashion. Young | Russell Gleason did very well with lan- | guages at college, so will probably have | the best luck of the group. The picture still remains the big con- :;}rmtlm of the season in Hollywood age. | And if Ricardo Cortez was a favorite of yours, you'll be glad to hear that he received a telegram from Hollywood of- fering him a very fine part the very day he set foot back in America from his European vacation. | It is a heavy role which the actor has accepted and for which he is now hastening across America. Cortez once furnished the cinema with a memorable performance—opposite Greta Garbo in “The Torrent.” At least, I think that | was the movie name given an Ibanez | story which revealed the Swedish lady |in a very excellent light. It grows in the hottest as well as he coldest countries, but in the tropics it is generally found among the mountains or in high valleys. It has been found on the greatset moun- tain heights man has reached, on pro- jecting rocks far above the snow line. One will not find many lichens close to large cities as they are easily affected by noxious substances in the atmos- phere, but in the mountains nearby they are not uncommon. They are particu- llarly abundant in the Rocky Mountains and in California. . With full powers. . Merits. . Horse with a certain gait. 64. Nothing. . Kind of herring. 66. Shadowed. Bond. Down. .
