1A—18 THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 1930 Building the “World-Wide Network.” MSSING FROM SHP, GIRL THOUGHT SAFE Disappearance of Alice Gid- dens Attributed by Mother to Love Affair. By the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES, June 5—While po- Hee of this city and San Francisco are investigating the disappearance a week ago of Miss Bernadine Alice Giddens, Los Angeles co-ed, from the deck of a coastwise steamer, Mrs. Wilda Giddens, her mother, today expressed belief the girl is in New York City, where she plans to marry a former Pasadena, Calif., actor. No trace of the 23-year-old co-ed has been seen since she boarded a coastal line here May 27, and registered under the assumed name of “Barbara Gil- more.” When the ship docked at San Francisco a day later, stewards found her stateroom empty except for a suit case and an unsealed note addressed to her father, A. W. Giddens. In the note she said she was attempting “to get away from my old surroundings.” Despite the fact that she subsequently received a letter, posted in Long Beach, from her daughter, in which the girl in- dicated she contemplated suicide, Mrs. Giddens said she believed her daughter had to avoid marrying an unwel- come suitor and to wed the actor, who now lives in New York. Mrs. Giddens revealed that since the young woman came here four years ago from Seattle, Wash., where she at- tended the University of Washington, &he has been involved in a series of love affairs and was engaged to marry at| least two men. | In the note to her mother posted in Long Beach before she sailed for San Francisco Miss Giddens said “life has | Just played tricks on me—and love, too. “I am sorry I cannot go through with the marriage. I am letting you down, I know, and hurting those I love best. I mh this way out, because it isa Landslide Dooms Mine. The main road has been swept away, and the railway is buried beneath thousands of tons of debris. Traffic will not be restored for several months. All Damaged Furniture! Again and again, the amateur radio operator has demonstrated his great value as a means of emergency communication to disaster-stricken com- munities. While other countries are discow g the few surviving amateurs they have, Uncle Sam 1s endeavoring to keep his large and useful group of experimenters engaged in useful and interesting work. He has licensed over 16,500 amateur stations. Dusing 1929, the Radio Division (Commerce De- | I partment) examined 3,163 applicants for amateur permits; 229 inspections were made of amateur sta- tions. These non-professional radiomen are often the sole “outer-world touch” for many exploring parties. Two-way communication has been estab- lished between amateurs in America and in Europe, South America and New Zealand, some “pick-up” 50 foreign countries. They now seek to duplicate by voice, the records they have made by radio- telegraphy. Commercial radio, telegraph and telephone, now link us with all nations and with ships at sea. Three international radio conferences during 1929 were at- tended by the Radio Division in the interests of the United States. This division is a “clearing house” for all moneys paid on radio message traffic between ships on the ocean and shore stations on both Amer- ican and foreign coasts. NEW YORK, June 5—A New York broker’s clerk yesterday saved a wealthy ‘Wisconsin contractor from what, police say, was & “city slicker's” plan to swindle him out of $25,000. As _police told the story, Albert Abendroth, who also is a banker in his home town, Rhinelander, Wis., came to New York on business and met a “wealthy retired hay and grain dealer from Kansas” and the latter’s friend. ‘They impressed him with their knowl- edge of horse racing and he agreed to a plan whereby the three were to wager $50,000 on the chance of win- ning $150,000. No cash was put up because the “grain dealer” said he knew the bookmaker.
