FRANCE APPROVES 2BLION BUDGET Per Capita Expense Is Put at| About $50, One-Third Larger Than in United States. By the Associated Press. PARIS. May 2.—France has & $2,000,- 000,000 budget this year, the biggest it ever has had if war expenses are ex- cepted. In francs this is 50,398,159,195, which | figures roughly as $50 for each of the 40,000,000 people. This is about one- third more than the per capita expense of the United States Government. Half the French expense, however, is for war debts and reconstruction. This big budget was adopted after several months of wrangling. Although it is the biggest and is twice the gold value of pre-war budget, it marks the [ beginning of taxation deflation. Ray- mond Poincare, former premier, who was called to the rescue of the tum- bling franc in 1926, demanded and was given a free hand in finance and his first act was to load on some more taxes and chop off a lot of expenses. | Until this year there have been no tax decreases, but now the burden is be-| ginning to be lightened. Lower taxes probably will bring more revenue be- cause the country is prosperous. With the Young plan theoretically disposing of the war, the French Par- liament has turned to social reforms that long have been contemplated, but whose definite proposal always has been met wit hthe answer: “Where is the money?” Premier Tardieu, in his grst ministry last Winter, fought to maintain tax- ation at the old level and nurse along the sizeble surplus, but Parliament grew hungry for the money he wanted | to save for reduction of debts and over- threw his government. Paralytic Who Liked To Strike Matches Is Burned to Death By the Associated Press. ASHVILLE, N. C, May 2.— A paralytic since childhood, Mildred Johnson, 20, of West Asheville, liked to amuse herself when left alone by striking matches, “They look so pretty burning,” she sald. Tuesday she was left alone in the kitchen of the Johnson home with a box of matches. She struck a match and the head flew off, igniting her clothing. Her father, Homer Johnson, who was in his garden, heard her scream and rushing in found her fatally burned. Fortune in Cigarettes. NEW YORK.
