A—14 o STOCK “SWITCHING CAUSE OF WARNING Better Business Bureau Finds Many Investors Being Defrauded. “Switching” investors from good stocks to bad, an old trick used to defraud unwary investors, has brought many recent complaints to the Na- tional Botter Business Bureau, Edward L. Greene, general manager of the bureau, warns in an announcement which describes the “switcher’s” meth- od of operation and advises on how to avoid it. He points out that honest salesmen FINANCIAL. or brokers who recommend the sale of any securities encourage and aid investors to obtain all of the facts. ‘They do not discourage independent investigation, nor do they switch their clients from good stocks to bad. How Swindlers Work. Describing the swindler's operation, Mr. Greene states: “The dishonest ‘switcher's'’ method is to deride the value and future prospect of your stock. He may tell you your stock is now worthless, or that it will shortly tumble in value. He gives various reasons in support of his contention. Yet he offers to take your ‘bad’ investment off your hands, and absorb the ‘loss’ him- self, if you will exchange it for the particular issue which he recommends. He urges immediate action and en- deavors to clinch the switch at one interview.” As evidence of the shrewdness of the raiders of sound securities, the bureau reports that “switchers” some- times create confidence in themselves and lay the groundwork for their swindle by first selling sound securities to their future victims. Later the “gwitcher” returns with dire informa- tion about the stock and recommends an immediate switch to his question- able, if not worthless, security. Urges Obtaining of Facts. To avold being duped, Mr. Greens urges investors to get the facts before taking any action. He suggests the following procedure to stockholders who to trad: in their present holdings: Investigate the reliability of the salesman and the house he represents. Investigate the security offered you in exchange. Has the company a succes- sul record? Has the security a gaod dividend record? Has the security a earnings record? Has the secur- ty sound future prospects? Has the security & quick resale market? Has the security a loan valu: at your bank? Has the security a r market price? Investigate, if necessary, the security you are asked to trade in with the same thoroughness. Givwe the company ‘whose securities you hold an oppor- tunity to present its side of the story. Any Better Business Bureau or any financial institution of good repute, the official states, will aid investors in get- ting the facts. Washington Stock Exchange SALES. Rails Lower. BY F. H. RICHARDSON. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 20—With a heavier volume of trading at intervals in today’s bond market, there was com- paratively little change in the prices of active issues other than the con- vertibles. Competition’ with an increas- ing amount of new loans has again become a factor and reflects in the adjustment of prices of old bonds to those now being syndicated. ‘The convertibles were steadier. The two telephone compa: 4'%s advanced a point, as did Phfllde iphia & Reading 6s. Atchison 4!2s, however, lost 113 points in sympathy with the new low prue for the movement in the common stock of the road. Baltimore & Ohio 415s were also fractionally lower and are now down 3% points from the high of last month. Little change occurred in either high grade rails or public utilities, with the exception of a run-up of a point in Columbus Power 4%5s. Unites Government bonds -nd ‘Treasury cer- tificates were irregular in a narrow market. Industrials were quiet with no s cial feature. Hudson Coal 5s respon ed slightly to a statement of earnings for 1929, which showed a net income of $681.224, compared with a loss in 1928 of $1,416,458. Eventually this improve- ment ought to permit the bond to sep- arate itself from other mortgages of coal companies now selling at low record prices. The foreign list was dull. the South American issues worked a trifle lower in competition with the high yield on the Brazillan coffee loan. Thh comparison of old bonds to new es also made for a more active mar- kez ln Uruguay 6s at # fractional de- cline from recent prices. French gov- ernment issues continued heavy, as did some of the members of the German It is now belleved that the rtion of the reparations loan Wlll m $100,000,000 instead of KONEY MARKET. NEW YORK, April 29 (P —Call money was steady today, although & somewhat easier undertone made itself manifest In the early afternoon, when some funds were offered in the “outside market” at 31, per cent. The official renewal rate of 4 per cent held through- out the day. ‘There was little new money offered, and a certain amount of loan calling was reported in connection with month end requtremmu Time money, on the other hand, was easier in a dull market. Thirty-day loans were quoted at 3% per cent, 60 days to 4 months 4 per cent and 5 and 6 months 4 to 414 per cent. ‘The bankers' acceptance market was comparatively quiet and the rates un- changed. —e- BALTIMORE STOCKS.
