BY RUSSELL OWEN, By cable to The Star and New York Times. WELLINGTON, New Zealand, 16.—Rear Admiral Byrd arrived at Wel- lington last night from Rotorua in time | for a reception at the city hall by the associated societies of the city, who wisl]l(ed to show their appreciation of his work, Sir Michael Myers, chief justice of New Zealand, presided. After present- ing to the Rntm;i‘ Club their flag which he carried over the South Pole, Admiral Byrd showed movies of his Greenland, North Pole and Atlantic flights and some bits of his South Pole film, which aroused considerable enthusiasm. Visits Maori Country. Admiral Byrd's visit to Rotorua was an interesting break in his work and social duties since his arrival in New Zealand. -He traveled in the ministerial car under the wing of Denzil Ardell of the department of internal affairs, the country’s official welcomer. He first visited Whaka, near Rotorua, | where Rangi, a Maori girl guide, took | him over ground that sounded hollow, with jets of steam spouting through it under foot. He dipped his hand into steam holes where the Maoris cook their food, as they have since their ancestors first d!scovered the place. He also vis- ited the geysers, saw bubbling mud springs and examined an old Maori vil- lage on the hill top. Admiral Byrd also took some curative hot baths, under the direction of Dr. W. J. Duncan, who has as his patlent Sir Joseph Ward, prime minister. The next day Admiral Byrd went to ‘Wairakei, near Lake Taupo, & beautiful spot in the mountains famous for its fishing. Rainbow trout imported from America thrive so in these waters that they have attained a weight of 20 pounds and still occasionally reach 15, but the average is just under 6 pounds. Byrd Fails to Catch Fish. A government launch took Admiral Byrd across the lake to a beautiful spot, where the party had lunch out- doors and then went out for fishing. He did not catch any, but a few of the others did. In his party were Dr. Edward Kid- son, head of the gmemment meteoro- logical bureau, and Dr. E. Marsden, secretary of the industrial research de- - | partment, both of whom were luckier than the Americans. William C. Haines, expedition meteorologist, had motored with Dr. Kidson for the trip. ‘This whole section is volcnnlc and from the lake could be seen the top of an active volcano, although most are n | now extinct. After nightfall, at Wai- rakel, Admiral Byrd had the luxury of nd | 8 swim in the warm geyser pool in the ‘moonlight before going to bed. Admiral Byrd went the next day to Wairakei Valley, where the hillsides puff smoke through the dense vegetation and gey- sers are rumbling all over the place. He saw the huge Champagne pool, where water at 245 degrees fizzes like wine, and saw the big Wairakei geysers, the i | Karapiti blowhole, where steam under 180 pounds pressure has been blowing off as long as the Maoris remember, (Coprright, 1830, by the New York Times and the St Louls Post-Dispatch.
