THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 1930. £ WIFE T0 AID LINDY IN ALTITUDE TRIP fl'ranscontinental Flight to Be Experiment to Further Air Transport. R By the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES, April 17.—Mrs. Charles A. Lindbergh, the former Anne Morrow, will actively assist her hus- band, the famous fiying colonel, in the eouple's contemplated one-stop experi- mental high-altitude transcontinental #ir trip to New York. While preparing for the flight, ex- pected to begin within a few days, Col Lindbergh said that his wife would be his navigating assistant. “If we encounter storm areas at high altitudes,” Col. Lindbergh sald, “we plan to continue by celestial navigation. We | are equipped for that with an aviation | sextant. Mrs, Lindbergh will make the observations. “Our speed at high altitudes will be computed from the drift indicator on the plane. We will seek altitudes any- where from 10,000 to 20,000 feet to test the possibilities of high air currents for | commercial passenger flights.” Free balloon tests of high-altitude wind currents are being made daily, the | colonel said, by T. A. T.-Maddux Air | Lines and Government weather and ra- dio stations at scattered points along the route. Reports of these tests will | be compiled just before the flight in an effort to assist in locating the fastest high current of air. Col. Lindbergh said he wished to em- | phasize that the flight is not planned for @ speed record, but chiefly to aid transport flying. He pointed out that conclusions of lasting benefit could not be made from one step and that the first experiment is to be made because he believes that fast express and pas- senger planes will make increasing use in the future of altitudes above 10,000 feet. The flight also is designed to test a new supercharger, necessary equip- ment for planes fiying’ at higher alti- tudes. No definite date has been set for the start.
