WAVES PENETRATE FAR UNDERGROUND Repeated Tests Have Conclusively Proved That Good Reception Is Possible. BROOKLYN, N. Y. (#).—There is lit- tle doubt that radio waves will pene- trate far into mines, caverns and other underground places. Repeated tests have shown that good reception is possible, including those made at the suggestion of Eric Palmer of this city in Colorado in 1925. At that time George W. Miller, jr., of Manitou, Colo., installed a five-tube re- ceiver in the bridal chamber of the Cave of the Winds, 2,000 feet down in the mountains. The antenna was wound through a mass of stalactites. Cleveland, Chicago and Pacific Coast dcasters were heard with good volume. Heavy dew Ipmnx on_the set, but it did not interfere. t a later time Miller heard South America in the cave. As a further aid in determining the value of radio in underground work Palmer’s son, Eric, jr, is planning to conduct short-wave reception and trans- mission tests in the Carisbad caverns in New Mexico. He will use the call W5QK with the Frank Ernest Nichol- son expedition. The frequency will be 14,000 kilocycles, and it is hoped to con- tact not only amateurs in America, but those in Europe and Australia ‘as well. Doll Serves as Badxo Log. D. C, TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 193 RADIO HIGH-POWER FIGHT IS FORECAST Maj. Gen. Saltzman Avowed Opponent to Present Range of Alignments of Radio. BY MARTIN CODEL. With Maj. Gen. Charles McK. Saltz- man. chairman of the Federal Radio Commission, definitely announcing his | opposition to the present range of high against the cleared channels and high power is about to be renewed with vigor. Gen. Saltzman joins with former Chairman Robinson and Commissioner Sykes in maintaining that the use of | high power, almost invariably requiring | the exclusive use of a wave length, is a With a majority of the commission thus favoring limitation of power, the result may be a breakdown of the cleared channel system of broadcasting, for which 40 of the 90 channels are now reserved. Cleared channel stations in the ex- the country will probably soon find other stations of low and medium pow- ers operating on their present cleared waves. May Be Compromise. As things look now, the ultimate limitation of power may be a compro- mise between the 5,000-watt maximum recommended by Gen. Saltzman, the 10,000-watt maximum suggested by Judge Robinson and the 25,000-watt maximum fixed in the radio licenses. The 25,000-watt maximum is simply a legal device, for all of the stations that have been licensed to use that amount of power have also been 1ssued‘ experimental licenses to step up their | powers to 50,000 watts. Seven stations now have that power, and as many more have been issued permits to build | new transmitters to that capacity. If powers are to be reduced, it means that the following 5t watt broad- casters now in operation d to have their present service ranges cut down: WGY, Schenectady; KDKA, Pittsburgh WEAF, New York: WENR, Chicago; 1' WLW, Clnclnnl!l ‘WTIC, Hartford, and | WTAM, Cleveland. It means also that the following sta- tions which have been authorized to build to a capacity of 50,000 watts will never be licensed for that amount: WABC, New York; KYW and KLS, Chicago; KMOX, St. Louis; KNX, Hol- lywood; WFAA, Dallas; WRAP, Fort Worth, and WOAI, San Antonio. Ask More Power. In addition the following have appli- | cations pending for construction per- mits for 50,000-watt stations: WHAM, | Rochester; WCFL, Chicago; KGO, Oak- land, Calif.; WAPI, Birmingham, Ala. wWowo, Fort Wayne, Ind, and WWJ, Detroit. Such high-powered broadcasters—in fact, all with powers of 5,000 watts or more, with a few exceptions—have re- quired cleared or exclusive channels; | that is, waves upon which no other stations were operating during the eve- ning hours. To place more than one station on such a wave, it was main- tained, would mean restncunx the serv- ice areas of each and producing hetero- dyne interference. Against the argument that high power furnishes the only means of giving service from the higher-class ra- dio stations to rural and remote lis- teners, it is contended by the opponents of hlgh power and cleared channels that | » such exclusive use represents a waste of the all-too-scarce wave lengths. A few exceptions may be made in the case of Middle Western stations serving | favoring the retention of 20 cleared channels for them.
