'DEMANDS PROBE OF INCOME BUREAU Garner Asks Department’s Handling of Tax Refunds . Be Investigated. Inspired by the recent refund of $33/000,000 to the United States Steel Corporation, Representative Garner of Texas, the Democratic floor leader, has demanded that the House investigale the Internal Revenue Bureau and its handling of income and corporation tax Tefunds. After the refund had been alter- Dately defended and assailed on the floor yesterday, the Texan introduced & resolution demanding the investiga- tion and said later he would ask the Tules committee to grant an immediate hearing on the measure in order to get House consideration as quickly as possible. Basis of Controversy. ‘The ocontroversy that Las centered around the refund since it was made R:bnc last Saturday was precipitated by 'presentative Bachrach of New Jersey, a Republican member of the joint com- mittee on internal revenue legislation which is required by law to pass on all refunds of more than $75,000 proposed by the Internal Revenue Bureau. The New Jersey member in a speech In the House contradicted accusations made by Garner last week that the joint committee had not given proper consideration to the steel corporation refund, contending that the refund had been carefully considered by both the Revenue Bureau and the joint com- mittee’s staff of experts. Charge Is Reiterated. Garner reiterated his charge that the joint committee, preponderantly Re- ican in membership, “did not in- to go into these refunds.” He also criticized Secretary of the ‘Treasury Mellon. it s FEWER CHARITY CASES NOTED AT HYATTSVILLE Decrease in Appeals for Aid Attri- buted to Better Employment Conditions. s sitat k Cee -West Coast TS Elisa—V: nes—Barcelons DUF TODAY.
