Reckon it'd cost old P. quite 5 bob, this cigar. Well, here's for it!" He put & match to the cigar and, after a pull or two at it, and a sip of his coffee, folded his arms and proceed- ed to reflect. Men came and went in the smoking room but Johnson took no heed of their comings and goings. He smoked his big cigar through, appre- ciatively and leisurely, himself wrap) in deep meditation. But when he laid the final inch of it—regretfully—in the ash tray before him he muttered five short words to himself, as if this in- g“""fl" lnmlnl xlum;x:: luxury had t an inspiring 3 m‘nt must be it—that!" ‘What that was did not then appear, for Johnson, without saying good-night to his associates upstairs, repaired to his bed room, got into bed, and, after reading a chapter of “The Compleat Angler,” a pocket edition of which he carried lwlv.h him :lhe;:’:fkre he :'e;t. I:H fast asleep—and a un! half-past 5 next morning, when he woke suddenly, got out of bed on the instant and began to dress. As the town clock struck 6 he let himself out of the hotel and walked across the market place towards the ancient town hall. There was scarcely a soul about, in square or adjacent streets, at that hour, and Johnson, who, as an early riser by habit, had been up and around the town every morning since his arrival, knew that he would have no difficulty in carrying out a plan he had formed during his tations in the smoking room. He had naticed in his prowlings before breakfast that just after 8 o'clock each morning & man, evidently care- taker of the town hall, opened its front doors, threw them wide, and immediate- ly vanished through an inner door into the basement, in which he, presuymably, had his own private quarters. John- son's notion was to get into the place as soon as the man had done his job and disappeared, and once in, to have a thorough examination of the interior. For he had already got an idea. The town hall, & building of which you could reckon the in centuries, abutted on an outer of the castle, and what Johnson wanted to know was whether there as a door communicating between the two edifices. If there was . . . ‘The caretaker appeared, opened his doors with a bang, sniffed the morning air in a careless glance around the market place, and vanished—no doubt, in pur- suit of his early breakfast. And John- son slipped inside, and within a minute had sped up the stairs from the en- trance hall and was in the court, in which he had spent so many hours the previous day, listening to the evidence against the two soldiers, It was a big, gloomy, cavernous place, ill-lighted, but Johnson knew exactly what he wanted glance at any- EDUCATIONAL. s le J SCHOOL OF WASHINGTON Svain_Censerval Method, ess. t. now. The smell of eggs and bacon met John- son's mostrils he turned in at the t Norman arch. They stared at im in surprise when he poked his head into the room, but the custodian rec- ognized him as one of the gentlemen staying at the Castle Hotel and bustled to His feet. “Don't disturb yourself,” said John- son. “I just wanted to know if I could go up the keep. I hear there's a grand view from there and it's a particularly bright morning.” The custodian, his mouth full of bacon, replied that Johnson could go where he liked; everything was open. And Johnson began the climb, and climbed and climbed, and at last came out on the other side of the door. That | was the door! Oh, yes, that was the | door the opposite side of which he had |already inspected. He pictured San- derson, spurred to flight by the sudden appearance of Anstie, coming through it into the safety and silence of the massive keep and pausing there to think as to the next stage. And—what would that be? He leaned out of one of the neigh: boring embrasures and looked down at the buildings beneath him. The keep of the castle, in which he was now planted, stood at its northwest corner. From its foot the curtain walls spread away at right angles. The great quad- rangle, of which they formed two sides, was of vast exient. The various parts of the old fortress, still existent, formed continuous lines within the curtain walls and here and there overlapped them. At the further end walls and buildings overlapped the high, scarped mount on which its founders had built {4is stronghold. At the foot of the nound ran the river. Beyond the river, so shallow that a child could cross it anywhere, hung thick woods. Above the woods stretched the moors, vast solitudes. What easier than for a man, or men, to make a way through the ruins of the castle, across the river, through the, woods and on to the moors? “That’s been the way of it!" muttered Johnson. “And there dre places in these moors in which a man might hide himself for months!” He went back to the hotel on that, planning and scheming. He was silent at breakfast as he had been at dinner the night before, but when breakfast was over he got Engleden aside and after telling him of his interview with John Oates on the previous afternoon and of his investigations that morning came to a point. “You'll have to do what I felt must be done all along,” he said, “and that's —offer a substantlal reward!
