It is.true that the leading roles must be in the hands of genuine artists, but the group from the Memo- rial Theater across the water includes such artists, though attention is easily focused on successive members of the cast, Evidently the visiting compan caught the spirit of the playwright. has It | intention of permitting any of the roles to overshadow completely the work 01‘ other conspicuous characters. Friar | Latirence and the Nurse, for instance, | together bave as great a part in the action of the play as either Romeo or Juliet. With this apparent ideal in bringing: these -dramas to the modern theater, the Stratford Players found in “Romeo and Juliet” an excellent vehi- cle. Notwithstanding the accumulated disasters of the final scene, the com- pany as a whole achieves the effect of tragic sacrifice for love, without harsh- ness. It also emphasizes heroism of both men and women in a series of in- cidents about which the tradition of the highly sentimental has come down through the years. It is a pleasure to witness a perform- ance in which the youthful lovers of the warring houses of Montague and Capulet fire played by actors of the type of Miss'Joyce Bland and George Hayes, both of whom present the enthusiastic spirit .of youth in keeping with their roles. Preshness and vigor of interpre- tation do not prevent them from dis- playing equal skill in depicting the in- cidents of supreme emotion and anguish which grow out of the feud of the two great families of Verona. The Friar Laurence of Roy Byford, and the Nurse, played by Olive Walter, both in the mold of wise counselors and sympathetic friends, are achievements which add materially to the success of the performance. Wilfred Walter as Mercutio has been endowed by nature with the ingredients of a dashing and courageous friend of Romeo and his belligerent family. General commenda- What Shall I Do for | Gray Hair?
