By the Assoclated Press BOLOGNA, Italy, March 1.—The world's longest double track tunnel, burrowing through the Appennine Mountains which form the backbone of Italy, has just been completed after 10 years of work. It will shorten the train run from Florence to Belogna, and therefore from :omn to Vienna and Berlin, by several ours. The new bore is second in length to the Semplon Tunnel through the Al but that is a single-track tunnel, Apennine Tunnel is 11.3 miles and in the middle of it is a station foet, long, called the Station of Precedence. Two tunnels run off from the station td provide side tracks. What the tunnel will do for railroa traffic between North and South Ital may be seen from the fact that it elimi- nates 22 miles of travel, and reduces the maximum height of the old road from 2,002 to 1,046 feet, which means that trains may be greatly speeded up. Many curves have also been avoided. The construction of the big hole has been a tremendous feat, involving thou- sands of men, and costing in all $60,- 375,000, Work began in 1920. In Feb- ruary, 1924, two shafts were sunk as a start on the Station of Precedence. A maximum of 1,300 workers under- ground and 550 on the surface was maintained. They used 967 tons of dynamite and excavated 1,488,000 cubic meters. The tunnel was dedicated when the last bit of mk separating the north from the south excavations was knocked through. The Cardinal Archbishop of lolenu imparted a benediction. e AUCTION SALES. FUTURE_DAYi - THOS. J.
