By the Associated Press. PHILADELPHIA, February 21.—A recently perfected device which would | make possible the cheap transmission | of electric power from distant natural | sources was described to scientists here ‘Wednesday night by Dr. Albert W. Hull, assistant director of the research labora- tories of the General Electric Co. The device, Dr. Hull said, is called a thyratron. He described it as a refined and modified radio powervacuum tube, put to special power transmission uses. He said the new tube “inverts” alter- nating current into direct which is “stepped down” for commer- cial use. The only waste of- current was said to be in the overcoming of the ordinary resistance of conducting wires and_cables. ‘The use of the new tube, Dr. Hull said, would eliminate the necessity of elaborate insulation and ordinary high- tension wires. The high direct voitages poses by lead and rubber, and the lines could be laid in underground conduits without fear of induction losses. Heretofore, Dr. Hull said, transmis- sion of electric power has been imprac- ticable at a distance of more than 200 miles because of induction losses and current, | |'of a cold; let Pape’s Cold the need for an elaborate substation for an extended visit. system DUBLIN, Irish Free State, February 21.—President William T.
