None of them could. Strangely enough, it didn't pop into one of those little heads that in all those three days they had neither seen nor heard any other Crow. If that voice Reddy grinned. “What is that black-coated Tascal up to now?” he muttered. “I don’t believe he is dead any more than I am. When Hooty the Owl catches Blacky the Crow it will be when he is 80 old that he is too feeble to fly.” But almost everybody else believed the news, and when, after two days had with no sign or sound of Blacky, even Reddy’s doubt was a little skaken. He even went over to the ‘Green Forest and saw the black feath- ers around the foot of the tree in ‘which Blacky’s old nest was. He heard Hooty snapping his bill at him from up above. had been the hunting call of Hooty the Owl himself there couldn’t have been a greater fright. You see, every one recognized that voice as the voice of Blacky the Crow. With frightened eyes they all peered up in the top of an apple tree. There sat Blacky the Crow. He was just as black as ever. His voice was just as harsh as ever. His eyes were just as bright as ever. But it couldnt be Blacky because Blacky was dead. It must_be Blacky's ghost. Anyway, that is what the little people of the Old Orchard thought. (Copyright, 1930.) Daily Cross-Word Puzzle . South American wading bird. . Anclent Egyptian gem. . Accumulated wealth. .
