And yet ... and yet ...” His voice warmed aagin, stimulated by the memories he reviewed. “And yet that presumption was not unwarranted. You suffered it: you listened to words whose import could leave you in no doubt; you made no attempt to check the course of an adoration that was revealed so plainly.” “Don't!” she begged him, anguish in her voice. “Of your pity, say no more.” But he was pitiless. “I must. I must understand this thing, or I shall never understand anything again. I told you it was your call that had fetched me out of England back to your side.” She answered him now, and answered him by instinct in his own language. “You heard it then because you listened for it. You might have heard it again at any time from the hour you left me until I saw you in Bruges, walking be- side the litter of the new duchess, a knight of the Golden Fleece, and was told you were the Prince of Guelders. This bright, delicate, almost ethereal girl who would have graced a court, to be subject to that boorish dullard. He drew her-on by the arm, and she suffered it. (To Be Continued.) FLOOD CONTROL PLAN REVISION IS URGED Reid Says Mississippi Valley Resi- dents Are Dissatisfled With Present Program. By the Associated Press. Revision of the Jadwin flood control plan for the ippl River has been proposed to President Hoover by Chair- man Reid of the House flood control committee. ‘The Illinois Representative notified the Chief Executive at a conference that the flood control committee would attempt to formulate legislation to bring about engineering changes in the flood control plans which would meet with the approval of the le in the sec- tlons who are dissatisfied with the Jad- win plan. “The people of the various sections of the valley are dissatisfied and claim they will be in worse condition, from a flood standpoint, after the Jadwin plan is in effect than they are at the present time,” Reid said in a statement. “They claim that the plan is not only wrong from an engineering standpoint, but needlessly destroys many thousands of acres of valuable land. Reid said the ruling of the Federal co\lm that land or flowage rights had uired by the Federal Govern- ment before proceeding with the flood eontrol project makes either a change in eering plans necessary or will re- ‘e the expenditure of hundredl of mfluonl of dollars for the purchase of lands. Couple Placed on Probation. On condition that they leave Wash- ington, Justice Willlam Hitz in erim- inal division 2 suspended & sen- tence of one year in jail and placed on probation Jean Dunning and her husband, Fred , Who were re- cently convicted of grand larceny in connection with the operation of the "ba e” on a man who was visiting woman at a local hotel.
