BEDTIME STORIE Chatterer Gets His Corn. A grateful heart will find a way For every favor to repay. —Timmy the Flying Squirrel Chatterer the Red Squirrel was very much upset. His,cousin, Timmy the Flying Squirrel, had. disappeared in| Farmer Brown's corncrib at break of day, and though Chatterer had waited and waited Timmy had not reappeared. Chatterer didn’t know just what to think. It was, of course, possible that Timmy had slipped out without being seen by Chatterer. However, Chatterer couldn’t quite believe this. What he did fear was that Timmy had been caught in a trap. Chatterer’s thoughts were really self- ish, however. What really worried him most was the fact that he had got no corn. He had counted on Timmy to bring out some corn for him. As long as Timmy did not come out, of course, there was no_corn. Chatterer hung around Farmer Brown's dooryard all day. Yes, sir; he did so. He hung around where he could keep watch, and he was in a very bad temper all day. When things don't go just right for Chatterer, he is very likely to be in a bad temper. He spent a great deal of his time scolding. He scolded Black Pussy when she appeared. He scolded Bowser the Hound and Flip the Terrier. He scolded Farmer Brown's Boy. Farmer Brown'’s Boy looked up at him and laughed. “What are you scold- | h ing about, you red rascal?” he cried. “T suspect you are scolding because you can't get into that corncrib. I guess you have had your share of corn al- ready. 1 don’t think any one can get into that crib now. I'm going to be very much surprised if I find that any BY THORNTON W. So it was that at just the.time that Chatterer, still cross and disappointed, curled up in his own bed over in the Green For- est Timmy awoke and for a moment or two wondered where he was. Then he remembered and promptly began to stuff himself with corn. You see, after sleeping all day he was hungry. When he had eaten all he wanted he peeped out. The Black Shadows had crept out from the Purple Hills. There was still a little light, but only a little. It was what you and I call dusk. Timmy slipped out and climbed to the roof of the corncrib. From there he jumped over to the foot of the nearest tree—the tree from which he had early that morning sailed down onto the roof of the corncrib. It was the very tree in which he had left Chatterer the Red Squirrel. Timmy scampered up the tree. At first he looked for Chatterer. Then he remembered that Chatterer would not be out so late. Timmy sat down in a crotch of the tree to think things over. “My, but that was good corn!” said he to himself. “I shall come over here every night. I am glad Cousin Chat- terer told me about it. It is too bad he cannot jump and glide the way I can. If he could, we would have a great time in here. with that corn. It is too bad cannot get sa this over, when suddenly there came an idea into his ead. Those great soft eyes of his began to sparkle. He ran a little higher up the tree and he safled down and landed with a soft thud on the roof of the corncrib. A minute later he was inside. An hour later he was at home in the Green Forest. When daylight came, Chatterer was back at the corncrib THERE'S “THAT GOOFY (ToHN JONES = WONDER WHAT HE'S WAITIN' THERE ON TR CORNER FOR. - WHN DOESN'T HWE GO c-c-epm |- 1 MEBN MAN - CARRKRM MER ?-2-800OKS?
