It was under Benedic- tine rule and used as a church and as a sanctuary, giving relief to travelers and any in need. It exerted great in- fluence in the religious world of the time, and at the period of the Conquest it was the most important abbey in England. Even up to the time of its suppression, in 1539, the abbots of St. Albans disputed precedence with those of Westminster. This ancient church stood until nearly the end of the elev- enth century, at which time most of it was removed by Abbot Paul of Caen to make room for a greater structure. The new church was the greatest in England, with an area of more than 30,000 square feet and a nave almost 300 feet long, a great central tower, 12 bays. a chapter house and _cloisters. Additions-were soon made by Robert de Gorham, who, in 1166, repaired and beautified the bulldings and made en- largements to the chapter house and cloisters. A Lady Chapel was completed in 1326 by Hugh de Eversden, a chapel declared to be a perfect gem of Eng- lish middle pointed art. St Albans is assoclated with much of historical interest. John, King of France, who was a prisoner of Edward. the Black Prince, after the Battle of Poictiers, in 1356, was kept here for some months.
