Reserve Board Reports Sec- ond Largest Increase in This Territory. BY EDWARD C. STONE. “It was reported today that the fifth Federal reserve district, which includes ‘Washington and adjacent territory, had experienced the best increase in de- partment store sales in November of any sectjpn of the country, with the exception of San_Francisco. ‘The Federal Re- serve Board an- nounced that re- tail sales in this district in Novem- ber were 43 per cent ahead of the corresponding month last year and that for the first 11 months of 1929 sales in the fifth district were 3.6-per cent ahead of the same period in.1928. Department store sales for the coun- try as a whole in November averaged only about 1 per cent larger than in November, 1928, according to reports to the Federal Reserve System by 523 stores in 229 cities. During the first 11 months of 1929 sales were 3 per cent la?er than for the same period in 1928. Donald MacGregor. Thus the local territory is well ahead of the average for the whole country in sales and also for the 11 months of the year to date. The San Francisco dis- | trict went ahead of the Richmond dis- trict by reporting a gain in November sales of 6.2 per cent. But the Pacific Coast area was well behind the fifth district in the 11 months, reporting a gain of only 2.8 per cent. inneapolis and Kansas City were next to the Richmond district in sales increases. Sales compared by Districts. The inventories of the reporting de- ent stores at the end of Novem- were at about the same level as a year ago, according to reports from 433 stores.
