The men put out Saturday from the Canadian shore above Chip- pewa, embarking in a 36-foot cabin cruiser loaded with whiskies and wines. LEDO, Ohlo, December 26.—Two men paid with their lives in a quarrel which began as a “friendly argument” early yesterday. Edward Shofner, 43, a widower and father of a 9-year-old son, was killed and Paul Smith, 34, left his wife, a |be young son and daughter when he was fatally wounded in the altercation :hlch took place in front of the Smith ome. Patrolmen who were summoned to the scene were unable to learn the exact cause of the shooting other than that “Shofner wanted to leave the house and Visit relatives and Smith insisted that ge stay.” Shofner lived at the Smith ome. ‘When police arrived Shofner was lying dead on the sidewalk with a bullet wound in his head and Smith was on the front porch threatening the officers. Patrolman Mills ran on to the porch grabbing Smith who was flourishing his loaded revolver. A struggle ensued and Mills grabbed Smith’s hand holding the gun and pointed it toward Smith. The gun was discharged, Smith being shot in the head. HIGH SCHOOL BOY KILLS HOLIDAY CELEBRANT By the Assoclated Press. Peter Nicastri, it was sald, picked up a revolver lying near the store cash register and sought to drive the invad- ers from the place. Gill grappled with him in efforts to obtain the revolver and the boy fired twis Gill's body was taken to Warren, Ohlo, pending an inquest toflay. The Nicastri boy was released on his recog- nizance. i COURT FREES SKIPPER. Stowaway Testifles One-Man Crew Fell Overboard in Fight, CADIZ, Spain, December 26 (#). —Dr. Franceschi Caballero has re- ceived his liberty as a Christmas gift from a Spanish court. The court found he was not responsible for the death of his ene-man crew, Angel Carbo Rivera, who was drowned on September 3 at San Lucar de Barrameda, the day after they completed a voyage from San Juan, Porto Rico, by way of New York in a 40-foot yacht. The stowaway on the voyage, Roberto Lopez, member of a wealthy Porto Rican family, bore out the statement of tl boat's commander that Carbo Rivera had picked a fight with him and had fallen overboard. Dr. Franceschi Caballero said yes- terday, when informed the u?xv;lln gen- eral had approved of the finding of the court, that he would sell the yacht, the Mary, and book passage back to Porto Rico by steamship. — PLANES REGULATED. Mexico Orders Immigration Exam- ination for Pilots. MEXICO CITY, December 26 (#).— To prevent smugglers and other law evaders from entering Mexico as air- plane pilots, the treasury department last night issued orders subjecting all pilots to the regular immigration re- quirements. Exceptions were made in the case of those employed by the Mexican Avia- tion Co., operating lines from here to Brownsville and Guatemala City; the Compania de Transportes Aeronauti- cana, operating from here to El Paso; Compania Latino Americana (branch of the Pickwick Airways) operating to Los Angeles and Guatemala City, and the Compania Transcontinental, now oper- ating within Mexico, but planning an extension to Laredo. NEW NING HOSIERY, KAYEDONTO TRY FOR SPEED MARK British Racer Seeks to Beaf Segrave’s Record at Daytona. el DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (#).—The crystal sands of the ocean speedway here this Winter will see a new and spectacular assault upon the world au= ;Jmnblle speed record of 231 miles an our. This time it is to be Kaye Don, well known British driver, who will attempt to wrest the title from his fellow coune tryman, Sir Henry Segrave. Segrave set the present record here last March when he exceeded by 23.7 miles an hour the previous mark held by an American, the late Ray Keech of Philadelphia. Segrave since has announced his re- tirement from automobile racing and has taken up motor boating as a hobby. His record-holding car, the Golden Ar- row, has been placed in a museum in England. Speed Classic March 1. Dates for the forthcoming speed classic, for which no American entries yet have been made, formally have been set for March 1 to 15, although they are subject to change. Don, who is well known in racing circles on the European continent, will a newcomer in the American high- speed classic. He is a veteran driver, The American Automobile Associa= tion, which has supervised previous automobile trials here, has been advised that Don's machine is under construce tion, Little is known on this side as to the specifications, except that it is to be equipped with two 1,000-horsepower motors in line. It is belleved to be of the four-wheel drive type. Indications that the world's record also might be attacked by another British driver before long is seen in an announcement by the '‘American Auto= mobile Association that Capt. Malcolmf Campbell of England, a former record holder, is considering a comeback. He set a record of 206.95 here in February, 1928, in_ his 12-cylinder Blue Bird before Keech came along in & glant 36-cylinder machine and boosted the mark up to 207.55. Whether he will come to Daytons Beach in the event he decides to try again is not known here. Title to Remain Abroad. At any rate, regardless whether Don or Campbell succeed in establishing & new record, the title is doomed to res main abroad for another year at leasy unless America can producé a machiné and a driver capable of bettering Segrave’s mark of nearly four miles & minute, It has been rumored that s=ve Americans are interested in the cone struction of a recerd contending ma- chine, but so far they have made no public_announcement. J. M. White of Philadelphia, who owned the three-motored fron steed in which Keech set his record, temporarily has dropped out of the high speed race ing picture since Lee Bible, a Daytona Beach mechanic, crashed to his death in it in attempting to regain the title for America here last March. He has sald, however, that he may come back in 1931 with a machine capable of developing a speed of 250 miles an hour. MEXICAN REBEL SHOT. Seven Others Held in Alleged Plot Against Ortiz Rubio, MEXICO CITY, December 26 (#).— A report to the government by Gen. Juan Felipe Rico, military commander at Nogales, on the execution recently of Gen. Carlos Bouquet and the detene tion of seven companions was made public here yesterday. It sald that prior to the execution Bouquet in a signed statement sald he had been commissioned by Jose Vase concelos, defeated candidate for the presidency, who now is in the United States, to recruit revolutionists on the Mexican Pacific Coast and that he had gone to Nogales to receive orders, money and munitions from a revolue tionary directorate established at Tuce son, Arizona. Those apprehended with Gen, Bouquet have been handed over to the flederhl attorney general for prosccue tion, VAGRANT FED BY POLICE. Aged Russian Eats Turkey Dinnes ‘With Relish and Weeps. KANSAS CITY, December 26 ()— An aged Russian who was arrested near the Country Club police station here yesterday while wandering as a vagrant found the Christmas spirit the only thought of “the law.” Penniless and unable to speak Enge lish, this wanderer in a foreign land was told to he]r himself to a basket of sandwiches which patrolmen had proe vided for themselves. He cleaned up the entire basket but still was hungry. ‘The two policemen who made the arrest then took up a collection and set & regular turkey dinner before the old Slav. There was no kaviar or vodka, but the stranger shed tears of thanke fulness as he seemed t0 be thinking of better days in the old country. “VIRGINIA” IN WHITE OR SHADES IN EVE- $1.95; 3 PAIRS FOR $5.50.
