The new transcontinental route is one of a series of new airmail routes recommended by the committee to open up the Southern hayf of the United States. Bids will be asked for the routes as soon as practicable, it was announced, though it is unlikely that contracts will be awarded until lighting of the routes for night flying has been undertaken. Southern Cities on Route. ‘The new transcontinental line will be from Atlanta to Los Angeles, with stops at Birmingham, Ala.; Jackson, Miss.; Shreveport, La.; Dallas, Fort Worth and El Paso, Tex, and San Diego, Calif. Another stop will be made either at Midland, Sweetwater or Big Spring, Tex., depending upon a survey to be made by the Post Office Department to determine which of these points has the best railroad connections with the surrounding country and other induce- ments. The route will tie in with the pres- ent coastal route now serving the Na- tional Capital at Atlanta. The com- mittee’s recommendation on this route follows a recent hearing on a proposal of Southern Skylines to carry the trans- continental mail at a rate which would permit the postal service, for the first time, to reap a profit from airmail oper- ation. Another new route recommended by the committee was from Louisville, Ky., by way of Nashvile and Memphis, Tenn.,, and Little Rock, Ark, to Fort Worth, Other Line Proposed. Another line which may connect eventually with the Southern Transcon- tinental at Fort Worth has been rec- ommended to run from New York to St. Louis by way of Pittsburgh, Columbus, Ohio., and Indianapolis, Ind. It is the plan of the department eventually to extend this route to Fort Worth by way of Springfield, Mo, Tulsa and Okla- homa City, Okla. This probably will not be done, it was stated by W. Irving Glover, Second Assistant Postmaster General in charge of airmail, until leg- islation has been passed allowing the Postmaster General to place mail on passenger planes flying on regular schedules. During the recent hearing on the Southern Skyline proposal, nearly a score of members of the Senate and House, including members of the ap- ropriations committees, promised that f the Post Office Department will rec- ommend establishment of the proposed routes, Congress will supply the funds necessary for establishing the routes in one of the deficiency appropriation bills, so that work may be undertaken imme- diately.
