JUNIOR COLLEGE ~ GAINS SUPPORT Ballou and Other School Offi- cials Are Behind Plan for Its Establishment. Dr. Frank W. Ballou, superintendent of schools; members of the Board of Education and other school officials are pledged to join in efforts that may be made to obtain legislation for estab- lishment of a junior college in the Dis- trict. Representative Arentz of Ne- vada, who, with Senator Oddie of the same State, has introduced a bill for establishment of a junior college here, has veen so advised by Dr. Ballou. In response to Representative Arentz's recent inquiry as to the status of the junior college proposal before the school authorities, Dr. Ballou has replied: “In my annual report for 1928 I sug- ted to the Board of Education the s::mmm,_v of considering the establish- ment in the District of Columbia of & four-year teachers’ college, giving a de- gree, and a junior college. The matter of the teachers’ college was taken up by the appropriations committee of the House and provision made in the ap- propriations bill for the establishment of such an institution. The Board of Education and the school officials have been devoting a large amount of time to the establishment and development of the teachers' college. These institu- tions were inaugurated in September of this year. Naturally much further at- tention must be devoted to the organiza- tion of course of study and the securing of an adequate faculty. i “No special attention has been given within the last year to the matter of the establishment of a junior college. I am sure, however, that the board of education and the school officials are interested in the establishment of such an institution, and will join in any effort that may be made to secure legis- lation for that purpose.” AN OLD FARM When I was young my strong right arm pulled weeds upon a_stony farm, for wages much too small; it was a dreary, lonesome place, that farm on which T used to chase, and gloom per- vaded all. There were no books that one might read, except some catalogues of seed, and last year's almanacs; there was no modern sort of light, but smok- ing lamps disturbed the night, their chimneys full of cracks. There was an organ, old and frayed, but that old thing eould not be played, its works were on the bum; there was no chance to talk of things, of cabbages or cats or kings, for neighbors did not come. We sat around and yawned a while, and then went out, in single file, to sink our woes in sleep: and life was so depressed and stale, the farm was so much like a jail, T often used to weep. If some one chose to go to town, he took the team, a gray and brown, and slowly creaked away; the horses must be used with care, the gelding and the old gray mare—the journey took a day. I visited that farm again, eight weeks ago, or maybe ten, and what a change ‘was there! The radio was at its best, producing strains from East and West, and music filled the air. And there ‘were magazines and books in all the divers cozy nooks; there was a tele- phone, so one might call the neighbors up and talk about the cow or pup, and not feel all alone. A handsome car was at the gate, and Dad and Ma and Jim and Kate could scoot away to town, and mingle in the urban games, and be back home again, by James, before the sun went down. I hear the stricken farmers yell, they say they are not treated well, and they-propose a scrap; but when I think of olden days when 1 was hoeing beans and maize, I think they have a snap. ' WALT MASON. (Copyright, 1629.) The ancient Romans used to carry’ children to be cured of their diseases by touching the bronze she-wolf on the Capitoline Hill. Though names have changed and the old temple vanished, and church after church decayed on this spot, the old superstitution remains and sick children are still brought there to be cured.
