THE EVENING WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1929. ICONTRACTS SIGNED FOR SIX NEW SHIPS [Merchant Marine Vessels to Cost Between $2,500,000 and $3,000,000. America’s merchant marine will be strengthened by the addition of six new ships by 1936 as a result of a mail contract signed with the American Ex- port Steamship Corporation yesterday by Postmaster General Brown. The contract was a supplemental onc and calls for an extension of present service to Black Sea ports. It will in- crease the amount received by the cor- poration from $1,194,397 to $2,616,316 and calls for the completion of two ships in 1931 and two more in 1932. “The other two will be completed in 1935 and 1936, The contract also provides that the Postmaster General, if he sees 1it and business requires it, can ask Jor the construction of another ship in | 1937 and one in 1938. Two Under Construction. The ships will have a speed of 14 knots and cost between $2,500,000 and ,000 each. Two of the vessels al- ready are under construction in the vards of the New York Shipbuilding {Corporation _at Camd-n, N. J., and two more have been contracted for by the game company. After signing the contract the Post- master General held a series of informal «conferences with representatives of three American steamship companics mail contracts decided upon recently by the Post Office Department. E. T. Ford and H. J. Rolg, vice presi- dents of the Grace Line, discussed South American routes with Brown. Elisha Hanson, attorney, and C. D. Dos- well, vice president of the United Fruit Co., talked with the Postmaster General about possibilities on the Central Amer- ican lines. Kermit Roosevelt, president of the Roosevelt Steamship Co., which is con- templating a North Atlantic service from Baltimore and Hampton Roads, also conferred with him. None of those who saw the Postmas- ter General would discuss the confer- ences, but it was understood that postal officials outlined to the steamship com- panies tentative drafts of the adver- tisements calling for bids on the differ- ent routes. The export company is to extend its service under the supplemental contract to Odessa, Norosossiiski and Batoum. L o Marriage Licenses. Charles V. Mott. 36, and Selma E. Me- Millen, 31; Rev. James W.
