26 BROCKHART HITS | music | LS COURTS LAY Senator Would Call on At- torney General for Survey. Mellon Scored. Senator Brookhart of Iowa charged yesterday that the Federal Courts were lax in enforcing the prohibition laws and said that if no one else did so he would call upon the Attorney General to make a survey of the way they handle liquor cases. Speaking at the Georgetown Presby- terian Church, the Iowa Senator said that when a Federal court’s docket was overloaded with liquor cases it was evi- dent that the court was failing to do its duty. “If a court will impose the proper penalties,” he said, “its docket will soon be_unburdened.” Brookhart also directed his criticism to Secretary Mellon, who, he said, should be removed from office. He ad- vocated an investigation into the is- suance of domestic liquor permits and border patrol work. In regard to the latter, Brookhart sald that he had found the border pa- trolled largely by immigration and cus- toms officials and that the force was entirely inadequate. “Yet,” he said, “when we gave Sec- retary Mellon $50,000,000 for patrol work on the borders he said he didn't need it.” / HARVARD ALUMNI T0 ENTERTAIN CLUBS TUniversity’s Musical Groups to Come to Capital for Concert on December 30. Plans are being made by the Har- vard Alumni Organization in Washing- ton to welcome and entertain Harvard University's Instrumental Clubs, which come to this city December 30 for their annual concert. A program of social functions is being arranged for the entertainment of the visitors, under auspices of the Harvard Club of Washington, of which Chief Justice Walter I. McCoy is president. Each year during the Christmas sea- son this musical and social organization makes an extensive concert tour. This year concerts will be given in Wash- ington, Pittsburgh, New York, Louisville, Cincinnati and Philadelphia. Included in the Harvard Instrumental Clubs is a “vocal unit,” which enter- tains with the traditional songs of Har- vard and a variety of lighter classical music, marches and spirituals, _The unit is under the leadership of Stacy Holmes this year. There are also the banjo, mandolin and orchestral units, as well as the specialty division, which rapidly is gain- ing in popularity. One of the most cele- brated units of the organization is the “Gold Coast Orchestra,” named after a famous section of Harvard’s campus, e s Singing in Mexican Army. Donohue, bari- tone, and Robert Ruckman, pianist—a program devoted to the music of Ed- ward MacDowell was presented yester- day afternoon at the Congressional Country Club. The program, offered under the direction of Mrs. Dorothy De Muth Watson, chairman of music of the club, was well received by an ap- preciative audience. Mr. Coss has come here recently from New Ypgrk. Mr, Ruckman is & Washington ‘boy. Mr. Donohue is another newcomer to Wash- ington, coming from New York, where he was a member of Roxy's “gang.” Mr. Coss, in opening the program, rendered three selections, “Rigaudon,” “Sonata in G Minor” and “Polonaise in E Minor,” displaying a remarkable sense of interpretation, putting much feeling into his performance. His nuances of color and tone were espe- clally commendable. Mr. Donohue, accompanied by Mrs. Watson at the piano, presented five se- lections, “Long Ago, Sweetheart Mine,” “The Bent Low to the Lily,"! “Deserted,” “My Jean” and “Thy Beam- ing Eyes.” Of the group the last was the best, drawing more applause from the audience. His voice seemed forced on the higher pitches, affecting the clarity, In the final presentation of the aft- ernoon, the “First Concerto in A Minor,” was rendered by the two pian- ists, Mr. Coss and Mr. Ruckman. This performance won the most interest from the audience. - The style of both pian- ists offered pleasing comparison. The orchestral accompaniment on_the sec- ond piano was played by Mr. Ruckman. A delicate touch and fine pianissimo | effects were particularly noticeable in | his fine presentation. B. W.
