TU14 0 wEE FINANCIAL DISTRICT NEAR TOP | IN RETAL SALES Southern Dairies Declares Dividend on Class A Stock. Financial Notes. BY EDWARD C. STONE. | Department store sales in November in Washington, Baltimore, Richmond and other cities in the fifth Federal Re- | serve district averaged 4.7 per cent| ahead of the corresponding period last year, according to the report given out i by the Federal Reserve Board. Strange to note, there were 27 de- partment stores in the fifth district which reported increases in sales and 27 which recorded a decrease during the month, The percentage of increase for the country as a whole was just under 1 per cent, so that business in this ter- ritory is much better than in many other sections of the United States. The rise was accompanied by an increase in volume, transactio on the New York Stock Exchange pick- Ing up to about 4,500,000 shares daily toward the close of the week. The week’s advance has brought the av, erages to point where 36 rfr cene of the loss, which took place from the high of September 7 to the low or November 15, again has been regainca. The recovery thus far appears to have been Inrgely of a technical nature fro the excessive declines which took place wrlier In the month. From now on the market can be expected to take cognisance of the trend of the trade, industry and corporate profits. Alt ) the recovery was de and of & geiy eral nature, outstanding strength wa hown by the uthitties, electrical equy ments and specialties. The amusement Broup was temporarily under pressure, partly as the result of the Government action against two of the major units in the motion picture industry. Money was again plentiful, with call loans ranging between 4 and 42 per cent. While time money was quoted at 42 | per cent for all maturities. The Companies. STOCK OFFER EXTENDED. 274 27% | % | wide difference of | | PROFIT BY ADVANCE Market Runs Into Selling as Forward Movement Resumes. BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL,’ Associated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, December 9 (#)—The rally in stock prices, which has con- tinued with few interruptions since last Monday, was resumed today under the ieadership of U. S. Steel common, but heavy profit-taking brought about sharp recessions in soms of the recent leaders. - Gains in the active issues ranged from 1 to 8 points, with Auburn Auto scoring an extreme gain of 31Y. Trading was fairly heavy in volume, with the ticker running about half an hour behind the market in the early afternoon. ‘The announcement of a 4-for-1 stock split-up in Swift & Co. common, coupled with rumors of other split-ups and stock dividends, provided the chief background for the advance, a running in of the short interest, particularly in the copper and automobile shares, also stimulated the advance. Little attention was paid for the time being to unfavorable business news, many traders apparently taking the at- titude that the recent reaction had sufficiently discounted the current re- cession in the steel and other leading industrics. Pools were again active in a number of specialties, but there was a opinion among brokers as to the size of their public followihg. Bidding for United States Steel com- mon _carried that issue up_more than 6 points to 189, or 39 point® above the low point reached in the break last month, but profit taking cut down the gain. Boston & Maine ran up 8 points and Hudson & Manhattan preferred advanced 3, but the other rails failed to make much progress, Union Pacific and Erie each selling down 3 points. The rise in motors was regarded as the usual pre-automobile show demon- stration, and was facilitated by the ex~ istence of a large sleeping short in- terest in those stocks. Nash was quick- ly marked up 6 points, Hudson 4! and General Motors, Studebaker and Marmon advanced 3 points or more. Anaconda, with a gain of more than 4 points, led the advance in the cop- pers, based on unofficial assurances that the 18-cents-a-pound price for the red metal would be maintained. Profit taking came into the market in increasing volume in the last hour. U. S. Steel and other leaders lost substan- tial portions of their earlier gains, Such issues as Union Pacific, Columbian Car- bon, Eastman Kodak and Western Union sold 5 or 6 points below last week’s final levels, while Allied Chem- ical dropped nearly 9 points. Invest- ment rails continued in good demand however, with half a dozen issues o this group gaining 2 to 5 points, Th close was irregular. CHICAGO LIVE STOCK MARKE ! CHICAGO.
