’ 726 ® 1B TAX IS PLANNED ON ALIEN WORKERS Purpose of Assessment Is to Force Employes to Reside , at Place of Employment. Every time an alien crosses an in- ternational border to come to this country to work he will be taxed $18 under a plan of the Labor Department to prevent aliens from making their homes in Canada or Mexico while em- ployed in the United States. The proposed - tax, the department believes, would compel aliens either to establish homes in the United States or give up their employment. It would consist of a $10 visa fee and an $8 head tax. ‘The Labor Department said yester- day that 6,736 aliens employed in this country in the Detroit area have re- turned to Canada to make their homes because of lower taxes and cheaper living conditions. American Workers Move. Canadian real estate dealers, it was -m. have been active in attempting to persuade aliens in Detroit to make their homes in Canada and, in addition, 1,589 American citizens have moved across the line to live. On the other hand 12 aliens ard 974 citizens were said to live in De- troit and work in Canada. The recent opening of the ambassador bridge at Detroit has_aggravated the situation, the Labor Department be- lieves, by enabling residents of Cana- da to get to work in Detroit quicker than if they lived in the city’s suburbs. Aliens Work in Detroit. There are 250 ,000 aliens working in Detroit and labor officials seid they fear that many of these might decide to establish homes across the border While retaining their occupations in the United States. A _similar sifuation was said to exist at Niagara Falls, Buffalo, along the Vermont and Maine border, and at E! , on the Mexican border. The same thing was true to a lesser extent at many other places, it was said. The action contemplated by the de-| partment is similar to that taken re-4 cently by the Mexican govemmenc to com) Americans working in ‘Mexico to live in that country. At that time the Labor Department announced the Mexican government’ was within its rights in ldo))flng Lhe reguhmm.
