The 1930 Christmas savings clubs will be opened by about 30 Washington banks next Saturday morning. The banks are to mail all these checks in the main office, where they will re- celve special attention by post office officials and clerks so that all will be in the hands of their owners before 9 a.m Monday. The new clubs are usually opened on the first day of December, but that is Sunday this year, so the earlier date ‘was decided upon. lnctd!‘?ta“)'.dsntur- day will be a Government pay day, so “fhat & host of deposttors Wil be at the banks anyway. Funds Redeposited. In the past considerable money from one year's savings clubs has been put hlck into the next year’s club or into permanent savings. It is expected that the same policy will be adopted again this year. Statistics prove that a large amount of the Christrnas club money s used in other ways than for holiday shopping. It is & time of year when extra funds are needed for scores of different purposes, Rent, clothing, insurance, food, auto- mobile "installments get their quota, bat thrifty club members also see.to it that part remains as permanent savings. m lfl 400,000, the amount saved in clubs conducted in this fiw‘ to ‘7 400 000 is a brilliant showing. The membership this year totals 87, 'fll an increase of 4,523 over 1928 and & gain in the amount of money placed in the clubs of $415500. In 1925, the first year in which the local banks con- ducted a combined advertising cam gl.n there were 66,279 members. Ir e 12 months they saved $4,447,741. The Christmas savings campaigns ‘have been conducted by the advertising committee of the District Bankers’ As- sociation, the chairman being Eliot H. Local Trade Holds Up Well. Incomplete reports from the Federal Bank of Richmond indicate that whole trade in the fifth district in October will equal' that of ocmber a ago. With several firms to be fl‘-'m from, at least two lines will have increases to offset possible losses. Two lines expect to break even and another expects to show a slight decline. !)nnnmmle weather has delayed movement of many retail lines, hlt holiday stocks are beginning to move satisfactorily. Christmas sav- funds, which show an increase the district, will be available next week. ‘Debits to individual accounts for the week ended November 13 show a sharp decline over the preceding week, but are 1 per cent above the corresponding ‘week of last year. Starting of work on two big passen- ger liners at Newport News, and the awarding of a contract for a $3, 00000 addition to the American Tobacco Co.’s Richmond plant, which means added mploymem for 1,000 by April 1, are the most_encouraging industrial events of the past few days. NEW YORK, November 25.—Stock prices showed distinctly reactionary ! tendency today as five-hour sessions were resumed. Prices of many leading 14 | stocks broke 2 to nearly 12 points dur- ing the morning, but brisk recoveries took place in many cases when it be- came apparent that the decline was not causing any extensive liquidation of either I.nvucmznt or speculative hold- ngs. ing was relatively dull, with the ticker keeping fairly well abreast of the market. Call money renewed unchanged at 4%, per cent, but the rate was again shaded in the outside market. An easy undertone developed in other monetary, 14 | markets. Business news generally was favorable. Wall Street was pleased at the response to President Hoover’s ef- forts to stimulate business and to re- ports that pre-holiday trade in the New York department stores was in large 14 | volume. Early selling was believed to represent profit-taking by traders who gpld ac- cumulated stocks in the early stages of last week’s advance and showed a disposition to take their profits before the beginning of the four-day holiday this week. Some experimental . short selling to test the character of the bids In the market also was in evidence, but with the Stock Exchange still demand- ing dally statements of short positions from its members such selling was rather uuunus in character, HONEY HARKET NEW YORK, November 25 (4#).—Call money remained in_good supply today ::1; I'h:!
