About four reekl behind in the re- | newal of rict automobile drivers' permits and hampered in the work by the carelessness of motorists in sending in their renewals, Traffic Director W. H. Harland today issued a plea for bet- ter co-operation from the motorists | whose permits are expiring in the next few months and those whose permits have expired and who are now sending in renewal applications. For those whose renewal applications are now in the hands of the Trafic Bu- reau, but who have not yet received their new permits and whose permits | technically have expired, Mr. Harland | yesterday ordered that the canceled check for the renewal application, the money arder stub, the check stub ca the date of the renewal application check, or any other evidence of the renewal application having been filed be recog- nized by traffic officers as driving per- mits if attached to the recently expired permit. To facilitate the bureau catching up in its renewals, Mr. Harland urges that applications be made at least four weeks before the permit expiration date. The traffic director urges strict at- tention of motorists to filling out their renewal blanks. Abbut 10 per cent of those received to date have been re- turned to the applicants because of im- Elrl)per filling out, and this has greatly ampered the small force allotted the bureau for the renewal work. Some motorists, Mr. Harland says, have made applications for renewals as mucli as a year ahead of time, and these applications are not wanted at mflnt. The traffic director points out t the renewed permit does not go into effect until the old one expires and the renewal applications anticipating permit expiration more than a month are not handled until they flll !n with ;‘he general routine of the renewal of- ice. Mr. Harland does not expect ever to cnmrlemly catch up with the permit renewal situation. C., WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1929, Everywhere It’s the follow-thru that counts . The same Scientific Principle is behind BETHOLINE’S remarkable performance OLLOW-THRU! Whether you'te bowling, driving a ball 200 yards up the fairway, or pitching a team to victory, it's the follow-thru that counts. That is what creates the' smooth, mighty power in each case. And follow-thru is just as vital in the motor of your. car. The amazing power of Betholine is based on ex- actly the same scientific principle. Betholine is ben- zol-blended. By making Betholine burm instead of explode this benzols produces “progressive combus- tion.” Instead of a destructive explosion each time your motor fires, there is a continuous sweep of mighty power, Betholine’s famous follow-thru! It gets the most out of the fuel energy by eliminating all lost motion There is no irregular vibration, no sud- den destructive shock— NO WASTED POWER! . But the' benzol in Beth- oline does even more. Blend- ed with a gasoline basc of - unusual purity, it lowers the firing temperature® of Betholine, producingquick The smashing stroke of “jJimmy” Mitchell, tennis instructor at the Chevy Chase Country Club, comes from a sweeping follow-thru swing, Maximum power and speed, resulting ftom a long, smooth follow-thru, are behind every ball rolled by Ray Von Dreele, nationally prominent bowler. ‘Walter Johnson, Mlnager of the Wulung(on “Sen- ators,” used a mighty follow-thru arm-motion to throw the “speed-ball” for which he was so famous. A smooth, complete follow-thru stroke accounts for the long, powerful drives of Alex “Sandy" Armour, Professional of the Congressional’ Coantry’ Club, start and alert get-away,even in coldest weather. It makes ‘Betholine burn completely, pri preventing carbon and knock. It puts thousands of extrs'heat units into each gallon of Betholine and - your motor gets them out again as vastly more power and mileage. Some motorists who have never used Betholine find it hard to believe the difference. But remember, the mas- ter, German engineers who plan the epochal flights of the Graf Zeppelin specify benzol-blended fuel for her giant Maybach motors. They cannot afford to guess, but must verify their fuel choice by actual test. And wise motorists who have done the same know that Betholine’s follow-thru performance in their €ars is just as remarkable. A thorough test will convince you. HOW TO GIVE IT A THOROUGH TEST Fill up with Betholine, preferably when your tank is empty. Then run on it for at least two weeks or 2 month. There are hundreds of pumps in the City and thousands more in seven nearby states.
